HAS ENKEL LEFT THE FREO NAVAL STORES?

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 30, 2020

I am wondering what is going on with the former Naval Stores at Fremantle’s Cantonment Hill. It took a very long time for ENKEL to finally take up the lease for the large shed, but now the very popular North Freo MOJO’s music venue is promoting the Navel Stores as MOJO’s OCTOPUS.

ENKEL was promoted as being about creating a new generation of change makers and other innovations, so is the shed simply another music venue in the Perth metro?

Maybe the City of Fremantle can put a (spot)light on this and explain what is happening with the ENKEL lease.

RECYCLE AND EARN MONEY

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 30, 2020

Fremantle’s new Containers for Change refund point opens tomorrow, Thursday 1 October.

The scheme will allow people to claim a 10-cent refund for every eligible beverage container they hand in to the refund point at the Fremantle Recycling Centre on Montreal Street and at the bag drop point located at the City’s Administration Building on Parry Street.

Businesses, schools, sporting clubs and community groups can also set up their own collection point where the City will provide collection bins, pick up the containers and take them to the refund point for counting and sorting.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said Containers for Change was a fantastic way for people to earn some pocket money, raise funds for worthy causes and protect the environment.

“Experience with container deposits schemes in other states has shown they result in a dramatic reduction in litter and a huge increase in recycling rates, so it’s terrific that one is finally being introduced in WA,”

Once Freo City has covered the initial set-up costs it is expected the refund point will also make a small profit for the City.

Containers for Change targets the beverage containers that most commonly end up as litter. Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund.

Generally, ineligible containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than 3L. Other ineligible containers include all plain milk bottles, wine bottles, pure spirit bottles, cordial and registered health tonics. Pure juice containers over 1L (or under 150ml) are also ineligible.

For more information, including opening hours and drop-off instructions, go to fremantle.wa.gov.au/containers-change.

NO BLESSING OF THE FLEET PROCESSION

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 29, 2020

I am sad to hear that there won’t be a Blessing of the Fleet procession from St Patrick’s Basilica to the Fishing Boat Harbour this year, due to Covid-19.

There will still be a ceremony at the Basilica at the end of October, but no parade through Fremantle unfortunately.

BONZA BITCHES BREW!

Fremantle BITCHES BREW is one of my favourite small businesses in our port city. They have been around for an amazing 35 years!

Many older artists and art lovers will remember when Ruth and Nigel Goodman started their framing business next to the Praxis gallery in Pakenham Street, which was very popular and contemporary in the 1980s.

Bitches Brew moved from there to Cliff Street for a while and have now been in High Street near the corner of Pakenham Street for many years.

When son Ben joined the business they extended it and now also have a large art gallery where artists can hire wall and floor space and Ben is also doing professional printing and photo restorations.

It is hard to find nicer retailers in Freo than Ruth, Nigel and Ben, so pop in, say G’day, have a look at the eclectic art on display, get your framing and photo printing done and support this outstanding small business!

GOVERNMENT STALLING TRAFFIC BRIDGE COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 29, 2020

How much longer is Main Roads going to wait with real community consultation for the new Fremantle traffic bridge? We are only days away from October and not that far away from summer and Christmas, so is the state government stalling in the hope that fewer people will attend townhall events in the hotter months?

No one from Main Roads was willing to speak at the forum held at Notre Dame University, or at the North Fremantle one, but I hear they did send four people to the Arts Centre Precinct meeting.

Minister Rita Saffioti, through Main Roads, is deliberately avoiding engaging with the Fremantle community. That is a lack of respect for Fremantle and our democratic rights.

The Fremantle community want real-not pretend- community consultation NOW!

THE BEAUTY OF PUDDLES

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 28, 2020

I am always happy when it is packed full, as it was on this public holiday, at the lovely CHALKYS cafe just under the Roundhouse in Freo’s West End. Dani and her crew are such nice people who make everyone feel welcome.

I caught up there with my old mate Mac for a few Espressos and when I walked home via Marine Terrace I took this arty photo of a tree reflection in a rain puddle.

THE FACTS ABOUT THE FREO POLICE STATION CARPARK

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 28, 2020

I have been reading some nonsense on social media about the Fremantle Cappuccino Strip carpark, that will become the location of the new police station, so I thought to put the facts out for all to read.

The car park was always only going to be a temporary car park because the site was earmarked for the Fremantle Oval Precinct development, until the State Government sprung the news on Fremantle Council that they are going to build the police station there.

Senior City of Fremantle officers and elected members tried hard to convince the State Government that the site was not appropriate for the police station and that it would interfere with their plans for the precinct, but that was to no avail unfortunately.

The City is trying to get financial compensation from the State Government for the cost of the construction of the carpark, so blaming the Council is not based on facts.

Now Freo City is asking the State Government to at least allow space for a public road at the southern end of the Stan Riley site, that would become a new access road into the Fremantle Oval Precinct, but will the government listen, or just ignore Freo’s wishes, as they are doing with the new traffic bridge?

FOOTY GRAND FINAL FEVER IN FREMANTLE

Posted in Uncategorized by freoview on September 28, 2020

South Fremantle smashed West Perth in yesterday’s WAFL semi-final and that means they will be playing in the Grand Final at Fremantle Oval next Sunday, so the first weekend in October is going to be a Festival of Footy in Fremantle.

WAFL fans are being encouraged to warm-up for the big game by wearing their team colours to work on Friday 2 October before heading into Freo for footy-themed after work drinks and dinner.

On Saturday 3 October fans will be able to hear from the team captains and coaches at the pre-game media conference at the Esplanade Reserve between 11.30am-12.30pm.

There will also be the chance to get up close and personal with the WAFL Premiership Cup and the historic Dixson Cup – the oldest premiership cup in Australian Rules Football history.

A highlight of the Grand Final activities on Sunday will be a Fan March along the famous Cappuccino Strip, led by the 2020 WAFLW Premiers, community and junior football clubs and some WAFL legends

Fans will muster at Pioneer Park near the Fremantle Station at 1.15pm before heading off down the strip at 1.30pm.

Those lucky enough to secure a Grand Final ticket will head for Fremantle Oval, while people without a ticket can head for the Live Site at Esplanade Reserve to watch the big game on the big screen.

The Esplanade Reserve Live Site will open from 11am and screen the Colts Grand Final as well as the League final.

There will also be a program of family-friendly entertainment and activities, appearances by former players and personalities and traders at nearby Fishing Boat Harbour will have special offers on food and beverages.

Across the weekend Fremantle businesses are being encouraged to fly the colours of the competing teams and offer special footy deals.

For details of special offers go to visitfremantle.com.au/festivaloffooty.

Bouncedown for the League Grand Final will be at 3.10pm, with Colts at 12.10pm and Reserves at 9.15am.

Tickets for the Grand Final will be on sale from Tuesday 29 September. For more Grand Final information and ticketing details go to wafl.com.au.
