The decision by WA Planning Minister John Day to allow apartment buildings of up to five storeys behind the historic heritage listed Guildford Hotel is a worrying trent for Fremantle and heritage protection groups around Western Australia.
The City of Swan is very upset their refusal was overruled by the State which ignored the Guildford Heritage Precinct Masterplan that only allows a maximum height of two storeys in the area.
The National Trust had supported the Swan Council stating that it does not believe multiple stories is appropriate for the location.
It is very upsetting that State Government agencies keep ignoring the wishes of local councils and communities and ride rough shot over them, even more so in significant heritage areas. If this goes on it won’t be long until we will have to fight a seven-storey building in Freo’s historic West End.
