Port cranes

When I walk around Fremantle I tend to travel light with just one camera with a short zoom lens, but when I drove onto the South Mole yesterday afternoon to take photos of the Al Kuwait sheep ship I took a 300mm lens with me and also took this impressive photo of the huge port cranes.

The court case by animal rights activists was lost and the Al Kuwait can be loaded with some 50,000 sheep and is scheduled to depart Fremantle Port tomorrow.

AL KUWAIT HOT TRIP FOR 50,000 SHEEP

Al Kuwait

The Al Kuwait livestock ship has moved from Victoria Quay to North Quay in Fremantle Port, to be loaded with 50,000 sheep before her departure to the Middle East on Wednesday.

The sheep carrier arrived in Fremantle with 21 of her 48 crew members being diagnosed with the Covid-19 virus, so they were sent for self isolation to a Perth hotel. The last six cases recovered over the weekend, so the ship can now sail.

It is controversial that the Federal Government allowed the departure with thousands of sheep on board, because there is an Australian ban on live export during the hot summer months in the northern hemisphere.

It appears that live sheep export is starting again from Fremantle. Two ships were being loaded at North Quay in Fremantle Port this Sunday morning.

There was a small livestock vessel at North Quay in Fremantle Port this morning, so is the transport of sheep been allowed again? I had not heard that the ban had been lifted.

FIRE ON LIVE SHEEP VESSEL IN FREMANTLE

Just by chance I happened to be on the south mole when fire broke out on the live sheep vessel Wellard Ocean Drover in Fremantle Port around 8 am this morning.

It appeared to be on the bridge and crew quarters, so hopefully no sheep were harmed, but the smoke was quite intense and the fire brigade, ship’s crew and port boats all worked together to get the fire under control at around 8.30.

At least six crew members were injured and are being treated.
