NEW BUSINESSES FOR FREMANTLE CENTRE

Posted in backpackers, city of fremantle, clothes, fashion, hospitality, retail, tourism, Uncategorized by freoview on April 17, 2018

academy brand

A brand new clothing shop will open in Fremantle soon. The Academy Brand will be offering clean and classic men’s and boys clothing from their Market Street shop on the corner of the High Street mall.

The Academy Brand was established in 2007 with a boutique at Bondi Beach and now has several shops in New South Wales and also one in Brisbane.

The brand is very popular here in Australia and New Zealand, so gents go and check it out.

tavern

While walking down High Street I noticed men putting up the sign at the Orient Hotel for the retrospective change of use to tavern at the Fremantle Beach Backpackers upstairs.

I don’t know if that will mean the end of the hostel or if the tavern will be an addition for the backpackers and in competition with the Orient.

FREMANTLE NEW MODE FASHION FESTIVAL

Sustainable fashion enterprise, New Mode Collective (NMC), is running a series of events from March 2nd-11th as part of their inaugural New Mode Fashion Festival (NMFF) in Fremantle.

Eve Maxwell and Acacia Armstrong founded NMC in 2017 as a platform to promote awareness of and access to ethically-produced clothing. So far, their projects have focused on education around supply chain transparency and the environmental impacts for textile production, dyes and everything else that goes into making our clothes.

As part of NMFF, they are launching The Fitting Room, a pop-up retail space where people can try on sustainable garments usually only available online. You’ll find Australian labels, Yuki Threads, Positive Two, A.BCH, Leo Strange and Skylark, and global labels, Dorsu and Tamay & Me, just to name a few.

The Fitting Room will launch on Friday March 9 at Creatures Nextdoor with an evening of retail, music and an Emerging Designer Runway, showcasing young talent from Perth and Melbourne, who are designing with people and planet in mind. Guests will also be offered the opportunity to have their bodies digitally measured with the brand new Kiyakaya Body Scanner. This software creates a digital avatar of the subject to minimise waste in pattern making, and make customisation and alteration easier. It is the only one of its kind in Australia but NMC and Kiyakaya believe it is the future of garment sizing. The Fitting Room will pop up at Replants on Saturday 10th, alongside a designer clothes swap, and again at Creatures Nextdoor on Sunday 11th.

To preface this event, The Fair Fashion and Ethical Enterprise Conference will be held at 1pm-5pm on March 9, which will unite members of the fashion and the development sectors to discuss what can be done to end human rights and environmental abuses in the garment industry. Keynote speakers include Oxfam Australia’s Paddy Cullen, the brains behind the KIYAKAYA Body Scanner and NMC founder, Acacia Armstrong. NMFF 2018 promises to be dynamic, fun and the first of many as the global movement to clean up the fashion industry continues to grow bigger and louder!

BREEDING FASHION IN FREMANTLE

breeding fashion

I only noticed this fashion shop in High Street east, near the Kings Square roundabout, yesterday, so no idea how long they have been there.

A New Breed Of Fashion is an interesting name for a boutique and the dog and cat on the window are cute, so go and check it out!

I suppose if you miss match your clothing it will be a dog’s breakfast. A bit like my daily appearance, I reckon. ; >)

COTTON ON FOR FREO ATWELL ARCADE

Posted in city of fremantle, clothes, fashion, retail by freoview on November 19, 2016

It looks like Cotton On might move into the Atwell Arcade in the Fremantle High Street mall before Christmas, and what a positive difference that would make to the drab shopping street.

While there will always be room for improvement and the redevelopment does have it critics I believe it has been a good compromise. The initial proposal was for a five-storey building which I vehemently opposed on behalf of the Fremantle Society.

The four-storey building is not overpowering in that location and it angles away from High Street, and the panels create welcome softness to the concrete. I personally quite like the way it looks from Cantonment Street.

NEW CALYPSO WAREHOUSE IN FREMANTLE

Posted in clothes, coffee, fremantle, retail by freoview on November 18, 2016

c-1

A funky new cafe and clothes shop has opened at Elder Place opposite the Fremantle railway station. The Calypso Warehouse looks inviting, cosy and cute, so check it out when you are down that way.

They sell women and men clothing, coffee and other things.

It is on the corner of the Wilson carpark and next to CODA architects.

Sadly further in town at the Piazza the Red Cherries coffee bar has closed but they now operate the cafe in the Fremantle Markets food yard section on weekends.
