HUGE FARMERS MARKETS IDEA FOR LEIGHTON FREIGHT YARDS

Posted in city of fremantle, leighton beach, local government, market, Uncategorized by freoview on July 4, 2020

There is an interesting prospect for the former Leighton Freight Yards in North Fremantle. Planning Minister Rita Saffioti has been approached to see if there is government support for a very large permanent farmers market building on the site.

The proposal comes from the group that is running the popular Farmers Market in Bunbury, that is open seven days a week. People shop in the huge market and get fresh produce that is harvested only a day or two earlier. It would employ up to 600 people, so would be a huge boost for Fremantle.

Of course there would need to be sufficient new parking because there is already a need for more beach parking during the hot months.

The project is estimated to cost $ 30 million, so would be approved by JDAP and not Fremantle Council.

I found this in the City of Fremantle archives:

In 1994, the Fremantle Regional Strategy identified the possible redevelopment of the Leighton Marshalling Yards for urban use. Since that time, a number of more detailed studies and documents have investigated planning issues related to the site. This includes:1998, City of Fremantle, D.G.N12 Leighton Marshalling Yards Land Use and Development Policy,1998, WAPC, The Vlamingh Parklands, 2000, Ministry for Planning, Leighton Regional Planning Guidelines (LRPG),2000+, Fremantle to Cottesloe Transport Plan– still in preparation2001, City of Fremantle, Port and Leighton Beaches Management Plan

PHOTO FOCUS ON FREO’S LEIGHTON BEACH

I don’t go to Leighton Beach very often so decided to give myself an assignment today and do a photo feature on the development and leisure at the North Fremantle beach.

I discovered the lovely MRKT SPACE cafe, boutique bottle shop and food finery, and the beach chairs at the kiosk are very popular with the young people.

WET, WILD AND WONDERFUL FREMANTLE

winter storm

A lone surfer braved the winter storm at Leighton Beach  at lunch time today, and this mad photographer did the same to capture this beautiful photo of the wild Indian Ocean and Fremantle Port cranes in a misty shower.

It looks as if the big storm bypassed Fremantle as I did not see any major damage during my two hour drive along the river and the coast.

ONE URINAL FOR LEIGHTON BEACH CROWD

urinal

People have questioned my sanity in claiming there is one single urinal only in the new $ 1.3 million facilities at Leighton Beach, that also include a new kiosk/cafe.

Very functional design to get men out fast, so you can wash your hands while having a wee.

So I went back again, double checked again and took this photo to show I haven’t gone all senile yet.

JUST PISS IN THE OCEAN AT LEIGHTON BEACH

Posted in city of fremantle, leighton beach, tourism, western australia by freoview on May 13, 2016

I went to have a look at the new $ 1,3 million facilities at Leighton Beach this morning, that were opened by Premier Colin Barnett a few days ago, and I am speechless.

The toilet and shower block is large and approximately 45 x 7 metres big, and half of that, approximately 150 square metres of it are the male toilets and showers. There are plenty of showers but there is only a single urinal and only two ‘fully-accessible’ toilets, and the urinal is next to the handbasin. I went back twice to see if I had overlooked the entry to a row of urinals but that was not the case.

According to Mayor Brad Pettitt Leighton Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Perth, but if men and boys need to urinate they will just have to do it in the Indian Ocean or queue up at the one and only urinal. What a waste of money!
