SILLY PROTEST TO CONTINUE WITH ROE 8

Posted in election, fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on March 31, 2017

It’s a day early for April Fools so it must be the real thing that there is a protest against the new WA Labor government stopping the Roe 8 highway.

I believe the very convincing election results have clearly shown the government has a strong mandate to stop Roe 8 and the Perth Freight Link, so it is nonsense to now want to force the government to break this promise and have protests and petitions to continue with it when the voters clearly showed they do not want it.

Premier Mark McGowan made it very clear during the election campaign that he would not continue with the highway and tunnel, so it is a waste of time to try to convince the new government to change their mind when they are doing the sensible thing of now negotiating with the contractors to relocate their workforce to other government projects.

We should be more outraged about the wanton destruction of the Beeliar Wetlands by the Barnett government, and that they did go ahead although their own departments recommended not to start there but at Fiona Stanley instead. That should be investigated.

Anyway, if you are so inclined and have nothing better to do, go and waste your time at this useless protest that will achieve absolutely nothing.

It’s at 5 pm today at Bibra  Drive, north of Hope Road.

MUMS’ CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS IN WETLANDS CONCERT

Posted in community, fremantle, perth freight link, politics, roe 8 highway by freoview on March 6, 2017

The LIVE FOR THE WETLANDS concert at the Fremantle Arts Centre on Labour Day Monday attracted hundreds of people young and old and many of them families.

They gathered to protest against the Roe 8 Highway and Perth Freight Link and show Premier Colin Barnett that the community-led campaign has gone from strength to strength thanks to a few mothers who never had been activists before.

It was a very Freo relaxed event with great music by Mathas, Grace Barbé, POW Negro, Usurper of Modern Medicine, Lucy Peach, Luke Dux & the Atomic Lunchbox, DJ Mama Cass.

The future of future generations depends on the sustainability of Planet Earth and it is no surprise that parents are very worried about the relentless destruction of our environment and stepped up to create their own campaign.

Well done and thank you to all who put so much effort and work into it!

ROE 8 PROTESTORS ON STRIRLING BRIDGE

An estimated 1,300 people walked from North and East Fremantle onto the Fremantle Stirling traffic bridge on Sunday morning in protest of the planned Roe 8, 9, 10 highway and Perth Freight Link tunnel.

They had a lot of support from passing motorists and even truck drivers who tooted their horn and waved.

There was a strong call for rejecting the Colin Barnett Liberal/National government at Saturday’s state election.

ROE 8 BRIDGE WALK PROTEST

There will be another protest against the Perth Freight Link and Roe 8, 9, 10 highway this Sunday March 5 at 10 am. It is organised by concerned North and East Fremantle residents who will be subjected to huge daily traffic congestion, pollution and noise if the highway and tunnel get built.

It will be a bridge walk to show the missing link in the flawed government process that will see traffic bottlenecking at the Stirling Bridge.

Meet at Sorrel Park in North Fremantle or Kitson Park in East Fremantle.

There is a big rally protest against ROE 8 tomorrow, Sunday February 26 at 1 pm at Kings Square.

It’s going to be a lot cooler than today so bring the kids and dogs, the grandparents, neighbours and friends!

Unfortunately I can’t be there as I am looking after a friend’s shop, so if anyone wants to email me a nice big crowd shot I’ll post it on Freo’s View when I get home late afternoon. Email: roel.loopers@iinet.net.au

NORTH FREO ROE 8 PROTEST

Posted in fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on February 22, 2017

The good people of North Fremantle protested against the Roe 8 highway and Perth Freight Link on Wednesday afternoon in the knowledge that the unresolved last link into the port will mean more and longer traffic congestion in the North Freo township.

Experts predict an increase of vehicles of one-third if a tunnel ends three kilometres from the port, which would mean a traffic, pollution and noise disaster for North Freo.

BARNETT DROWNING, NOT SWIMMING

Some not very creative people have painted over the Beeliar Wetlands caricature at Fremantle’s Stevens Reserve that showed Premier Colin Barnett bulldozing the wetlands.

It is a case of I have nothing substantial to say, but I don’t like the points you make, which is pretty silly and immature.

What the morons who destroyed the artwork did not realise in the dark is that is now looks as if poor old Colin is drowning. My gut feeling tells me the voters of Western Australia won’t come to his rescue.

BAD PLANNING NO EXCUSE FOR PERTH FREIGHT LINK

Posted in fremantle, fremantle ports, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on February 11, 2017

There is an interesting opinion piece by Liberal party fan Paul Murray in the West Australian today about Fremantle Port and the Perth Freight Link.

Let me first state that I am sick and tired of politicising the debate about this issue and wished all politicians would stick with the facts because this is an extremely important and very expensive project for WA.

Murray writes that on August 13, 2014 nine senior Fremantle Port and Department of Transport officials plus consultants on transport economies and land use were involved in a workshop, and that the report they published in April 2015 states that the existing harbour will not reach capacity until 2055 and an overflow outer harbour would not be needed until 2038, so another 21 years from now.

The workshop concluded that Fremantle Port’s capacity was 2,1 million TEUs(container units) and not as had been assumed previously only around 1,3 million TEUs.

If Murray reports facts here, and why would he not, this puts a different light on the urgent need to build an outer harbour at Kwinana, but for me the Perth Freight Link still does not make sense, even if an outer harbour is not needed and built the next twenty years.

I disagree with Paul Murray that a major part of the PFL attraction is that is solves the problem of massive traffic congestion south of the river. It does not because the last link will not be built and there will not be a better connection into the port.

What will happen is that the proposed tunnel will spew out thousands of trucks and private cars near Stirling Highway that have nowhere to go but the two already congested bridges to North Fremantle. Traffic chaos in North Freo would be a result of bad government planning and not having been able to find a solution on how to connect Roe 8 and 9 to Fremantle Port.

The Perth Freight Link highway/tunnel is unresolved and until the port connection is solved it should not be built. There will not be better port efficiency because the new road will soon be congested and trucks to the port will end up in long queues at Stirling Highway and in North Fremantle. That in my opinion is bad planning that is politically driven without achieving the essential outcomes it should aim for.
