NORTH FREO ROE 8 PROTEST

Posted in fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on February 22, 2017

The good people of North Fremantle protested against the Roe 8 highway and Perth Freight Link on Wednesday afternoon in the knowledge that the unresolved last link into the port will mean more and longer traffic congestion in the North Freo township.

Experts predict an increase of vehicles of one-third if a tunnel ends three kilometres from the port, which would mean a traffic, pollution and noise disaster for North Freo.

BARNETT DROWNING, NOT SWIMMING

Some not very creative people have painted over the Beeliar Wetlands caricature at Fremantle’s Stevens Reserve that showed Premier Colin Barnett bulldozing the wetlands.

It is a case of I have nothing substantial to say, but I don’t like the points you make, which is pretty silly and immature.

What the morons who destroyed the artwork did not realise in the dark is that is now looks as if poor old Colin is drowning. My gut feeling tells me the voters of Western Australia won’t come to his rescue.

BAD PLANNING NO EXCUSE FOR PERTH FREIGHT LINK

Posted in fremantle, fremantle ports, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on February 11, 2017

There is an interesting opinion piece by Liberal party fan Paul Murray in the West Australian today about Fremantle Port and the Perth Freight Link.

Let me first state that I am sick and tired of politicising the debate about this issue and wished all politicians would stick with the facts because this is an extremely important and very expensive project for WA.

Murray writes that on August 13, 2014 nine senior Fremantle Port and Department of Transport officials plus consultants on transport economies and land use were involved in a workshop, and that the report they published in April 2015 states that the existing harbour will not reach capacity until 2055 and an overflow outer harbour would not be needed until 2038, so another 21 years from now.

The workshop concluded that Fremantle Port’s capacity was 2,1 million TEUs(container units) and not as had been assumed previously only around 1,3 million TEUs.

If Murray reports facts here, and why would he not, this puts a different light on the urgent need to build an outer harbour at Kwinana, but for me the Perth Freight Link still does not make sense, even if an outer harbour is not needed and built the next twenty years.

I disagree with Paul Murray that a major part of the PFL attraction is that is solves the problem of massive traffic congestion south of the river. It does not because the last link will not be built and there will not be a better connection into the port.

What will happen is that the proposed tunnel will spew out thousands of trucks and private cars near Stirling Highway that have nowhere to go but the two already congested bridges to North Fremantle. Traffic chaos in North Freo would be a result of bad government planning and not having been able to find a solution on how to connect Roe 8 and 9 to Fremantle Port.

The Perth Freight Link highway/tunnel is unresolved and until the port connection is solved it should not be built. There will not be better port efficiency because the new road will soon be congested and trucks to the port will end up in long queues at Stirling Highway and in North Fremantle. That in my opinion is bad planning that is politically driven without achieving the essential outcomes it should aim for.

IT IS OKAY TO NOT AGREE!

I am very disappointed that social media brings out so much negativity and bullies and name-calling as there is absolutely no need for it. It is okay to disagree and have a different opinion but it is not okay to express that by making personal and unwarranted attacks on those who disagree with you.

The cancellation of the Australia Day fireworks by the City of Fremantle has resulted in vile attacks on Fremantle Council and more specifically Mayor Brad Pettitt and he does not deserve that.

As the Mayor Brad Pettitt is the spokesperson for Fremantle Council but he does not and can not under the local government act make dictatorial decisions on his own. The Australia Day decision was made by full council and required a majority vote.

To claim that 99.9 per cent of Fremantle people are against the Council decision is not based on any facts or surveys, so why make that claim? Facts are these: 15,000 people attended yesterday’s One Day in Freo concert, 1,300 attended the Nyoongar smoking ceremony at the Roundhouse, and  60 people attended the pro Australia Day rally the day before. And 5223 people viewed my photos of the smoking ceremony here on Freo’s View and many others on Facebook.

The same applies to the Roe 8 protests. You want Roe 8 and believe it will be good for traffic and some local communities. Fine, you have every right to express and support that, but please do not call these genuinely concerned people the unwashed, dreadlock, dole bludgers, etc. as the protestors represent a big cross section of our community. They are business people, mums and dads, pensioners, etc. and not some leftwing loonies.

It is healthy to disagree and it is great that we live in a country where we can openly express our opinions and feelings, but we can do so in a mature and rational way without making personal, defamatory and insulting attacks on people who stand up for what they believe is right. We are better than that!

ASBESTOS FEAR AT ROE 8 CONSTRUCTION SITE

Posted in fremantle, health, health&safety, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on January 16, 2017

Residents near the Roe 8 highway clearing at the Beeliar Wetlands have raised serious concerns about the lack of dust repression measures by the building contractors. They say the area is a known location for asbestos dumping and that the clearing of the bushland is dangerous for the health of local residents, police officers and workers.

It seems unbelievable that the EPA, Worksafe and unions do not insist on watering trucks being used to spray down the dust at the Roe 8 works, as that is even required in the most remote locations of WA at mining sites.

I have been to hundreds of mines around Australia in the last 30 years and have never not seen dust repression measures at any of them, so why does the WA state government ignore this basic rule of protecting the health of everyone near the construction site?

BARNETT PLEDGE TO BUILD PERTH FREIGHT LINK

Posted in fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway, state government, western australia by freoview on January 15, 2017

In an interview today with the Sunday Times  WA Premier Colin Barnett has pledged to go ahead with building the Perth Freight Link despite massive community protest.

Barnett said that if re-elected the construction of the tunnel would start in 2020 and that there was no need to build another bridge over the Swan river or a tunnel underneath it to accommodate the container trucks to Fremantle Port.

While the pros and cons of the PFL can be debated forever it is mind-blowing that the Premier believes the PFL will adequately work without building the last link into the port. That is putting his head in the sand and refusing to acknowledge the huge bottleneck it will create at Stirling Highway and in North Fremantle.

Even those who agree with the PFL concept know it won’t work properly unless a new Swan river crossing is provided specifically for freight, so why the state government only wants to build 90% of the freight tollway and not finish it shows they have not found a proper solution to do so, but stubbornly want to go ahead anyway. That is childish and not good governance.

LOCAL COUNCILLORS ARRESTED AT ROE 8 SITE

Posted in beeliar wetlands, city of fremantle, council, environment, politics, roe 8 highway by freoview on January 11, 2017

Fremantle Councillor Sam Wainwright and City of Melville Councillor Tim Barling were arrested at the Roe 8 site today after chaining themselves to fences to stop bulldozers from entering the site and destroying precious wetlands.

It is a risky business for Councillors to do this kind of non-violent protest because if they get convicted it could mean they are no longer eligible to be on local council.

Good on them for standing up for what is right and for protesting against the destruction of the Beeliar Wetlands!
