ROE 8 HIGHWAY ROAD RESERVE TO BE REZONED

PFL

The WA State Government will today introduce legislation in Parliament to scrap the  Perth Freight Link/Roe 8 highway extension road reserve, and rezone 86 hectares of the Beeliar Wetlands into parks and recreation in the Metropolitan Region Scheme.

It will be a challenge to get it through the Legislative Council though and might need cross benchers to achieve the goal.

While I welcome the protection of the Beeliar Wetlands I wonder if this move is not premature with the Westport Taskforce handing its first report to the Minister soon, which will state that there are no ‘fatal flaws’ for the expansion of Fremantle Port, Kwinana and Bunbury Port, so road connectivity will have to be part of the considerations to either expand Fremantle Port, or move part of the port operations to Kwinana and/or Bunbury.

Fremantle Professor Peter Newman was awarded the WA Premier’s Award of Scientist of the Year 2018 on Wednesday night.

Newman heads the Curtin University of Sustainable Policy-CUSP and is renowned as a sustainable cities advocate. He also strongly opposed the Roe 8 and Perth Freight Link.

NEW PUBLIC DEBATE ON ROE 8

The announcement by WA Premier Mark McGowan about the Fremantle High Street upgrade has resurrected the debate about the canceled Perth Freight Link and Roe 8 highway.

There have been quite a few letters in the West Australian in support of Roe 8 and the PFL and there was an opinion piece by Liza Harvey MLA, who was the deputy premier of the previous government under Colin Barnett.

It is very intriguing to note that Liza Harvey now suddenly writes there would be other options for the McGowan government to consider than going through the Beeliar wetlands. If that is the case, why did the former Liberal/National state government not consider those options but instead, and in spite, decided to start the demolition of the wetlands, although all the indications were that they would be kicked out of government. Liza Harvey’s hypocrisy is unbelievable.

Fact is also that the Perth Freight Link was not exclusively for freight and trucks, as some letter writers claim and that it actually did not go to Fremantle Port but finished at Stirling Highway. A part solution really was no solution. Ask North Freo residents!

The new plans are not ideal either as they don’t address pedestrian crossing adequately and while I do like roundabouts I don’t like that so many Perth motorists don’t seem to know how to use them, so that could become a problem.

Freight trucks have overturned in the past at the intersection of High Street and Stirling Highway because of taking the corner at excessive speed, a roundabout won’t fix that problem either.

A new outer harbour is still a very long way away and freight to the port will no doubt increase, so when is the state government going to address more freight by rail?

SILLY PROTEST TO CONTINUE WITH ROE 8

Posted in election, fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on March 31, 2017

It’s a day early for April Fools so it must be the real thing that there is a protest against the new WA Labor government stopping the Roe 8 highway.

I believe the very convincing election results have clearly shown the government has a strong mandate to stop Roe 8 and the Perth Freight Link, so it is nonsense to now want to force the government to break this promise and have protests and petitions to continue with it when the voters clearly showed they do not want it.

Premier Mark McGowan made it very clear during the election campaign that he would not continue with the highway and tunnel, so it is a waste of time to try to convince the new government to change their mind when they are doing the sensible thing of now negotiating with the contractors to relocate their workforce to other government projects.

We should be more outraged about the wanton destruction of the Beeliar Wetlands by the Barnett government, and that they did go ahead although their own departments recommended not to start there but at Fiona Stanley instead. That should be investigated.

Anyway, if you are so inclined and have nothing better to do, go and waste your time at this useless protest that will achieve absolutely nothing.

It’s at 5 pm today at Bibra  Drive, north of Hope Road.

MUMS’ CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS IN WETLANDS CONCERT

Posted in community, fremantle, perth freight link, politics, roe 8 highway by freoview on March 6, 2017

The LIVE FOR THE WETLANDS concert at the Fremantle Arts Centre on Labour Day Monday attracted hundreds of people young and old and many of them families.

They gathered to protest against the Roe 8 Highway and Perth Freight Link and show Premier Colin Barnett that the community-led campaign has gone from strength to strength thanks to a few mothers who never had been activists before.

It was a very Freo relaxed event with great music by Mathas, Grace Barbé, POW Negro, Usurper of Modern Medicine, Lucy Peach, Luke Dux & the Atomic Lunchbox, DJ Mama Cass.

The future of future generations depends on the sustainability of Planet Earth and it is no surprise that parents are very worried about the relentless destruction of our environment and stepped up to create their own campaign.

Well done and thank you to all who put so much effort and work into it!

ROE 8 PROTESTORS ON STRIRLING BRIDGE

An estimated 1,300 people walked from North and East Fremantle onto the Fremantle Stirling traffic bridge on Sunday morning in protest of the planned Roe 8, 9, 10 highway and Perth Freight Link tunnel.

They had a lot of support from passing motorists and even truck drivers who tooted their horn and waved.

There was a strong call for rejecting the Colin Barnett Liberal/National government at Saturday’s state election.

ROE 8 BRIDGE WALK PROTEST

last-stand-flyer3

There will be another protest against the Perth Freight Link and Roe 8, 9, 10 highway this Sunday March 5 at 10 am. It is organised by concerned North and East Fremantle residents who will be subjected to huge daily traffic congestion, pollution and noise if the highway and tunnel get built.

It will be a bridge walk to show the missing link in the flawed government process that will see traffic bottlenecking at the Stirling Bridge.

Meet at Sorrel Park in North Fremantle or Kitson Park in East Fremantle.

There is a big rally protest against ROE 8 tomorrow, Sunday February 26 at 1 pm at Kings Square.

It’s going to be a lot cooler than today so bring the kids and dogs, the grandparents, neighbours and friends!

Unfortunately I can’t be there as I am looking after a friend’s shop, so if anyone wants to email me a nice big crowd shot I’ll post it on Freo’s View when I get home late afternoon. Email: roel.loopers@iinet.net.au
