The Opportunity

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual for the Heritage Interpretation Officer role within the Heritage and Property Services Division. In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to the understanding of the cultural, national and international significance of Fremantle Prison. You will review and develop heritage interpretation programs such as tours, signage, training and educational programs to a diverse audience including international visitors, students, special interest groups and the general public.

This position is based at Fremantle Prison and is a permanent and full-time position; however, consideration may be given to applicants seeking part-time opportunities. Suitable applicants may be considered for appointment to similar (permanent, fixed term, full-time or part-time) vacancies for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial date of the appointment.

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate;

  • Your ability to evaluate, develop and deliver high quality content and material for entertaining and educational visitor experiences, training and programs for a diverse audience including international visitors, students, special interest groups and the general public
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills with the ability to develop and maintain networks with internal and external stakeholders
  • Extensive experience in the cultural heritage sector and an understanding of heritage interpretation and conservation

FREO’S CEO NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR ARTS&CULTURE

The new City of Fremantle job advertisement for a new Manager Arts&Culture reveals that the department has been moved and is no longer part of the Community Development Department.

The next Manager Arts&Culture will be reporting directly to CEO Phil StJohn and no longer to Director Fiona Hodges. I hear the CEO is now in charge of Arts&Culture at Fremantle.

I questioned several months ago what was going on as Pete Stone suddenly left the position and Destry Puiashame who took over from him was encouraged to resign within a few months, although he had relocated his young family from Melbourne to Fremantle, obviously because he expected to be in the job for many years.

There have been many rumours and allegations I won’t mention here, but we will probably never find out what the real reasons for the resignations and changes are. It is a concern though in the City of Arts when the creatives at Freo City don’t feel appreciated and respected.

The traditional May Day parade marched through Fremantle and what a noisy, colourful and important event it is.

More than 2,000 people, including WA Premier Mark McGowan attended the march while many watched on.

The Maritime Union of Australia diverted from the normal route to pay respect at the Kings Square fountain to Tom Edwards, a port worker who was killed 100 years ago.

The position for a new CEO for the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce is advertised on SEEK, so that means that the vivacious Olwyn Williams will be leaving the Freo Chamber.

Williams took over from Tim Milsom three or four years ago and was a very strong voice for Fremantle’s traders.

The Position

We are seeking a dynamic, strategic thinking and collaborative professional to lead the Arts and Culture team.  We are seeking a leader experienced in planning and the delivery of innovation and contemporary arts and festivals thinking who will be responsible for new and enhanced approaches to servicing our Arts and Culture community.

Reporting to the Director Community Development, you will lead, develop and deliver the culture and arts plan for the City of Fremantle, including public art, festivals and events and the Fremantle Arts Centre.

With outstanding leadership and people skills, you will be able to work collaboratively, building positive and proactive networks across a range of stakeholders.  Experience in leading teams will be essential, as will a proven ability to manage in a local government setting.
