BOOMERANG BAGS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Boomerang Bags

The Fremantle Growers Green Farmers Market have taken on the challenge of banning plastic bags in the market and will join the Boomerang Bags project this Sunday.

Boomerang Bags is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to reduce the use of plastic bags by engaging local communities to make re-usable (or boomerang) bags out of recycled material. It was only launched 3 years ago, and already 85,953+ Boomerang Bags have been made which has reduced plastic bag use by around 47 Million!

There are already 273+ Boomerang Bags Communities underway with Fremantle now joining the cause.

Growers Green  have been trying to educate the stallholders, and most are on board but plastic continues to come into the market. This is mostly due to lack of planning, forgetting to bring your own bags for shopping, or spontaneously deciding to buy a few things.

The organisers aim is to make 1000 Boomerang Bags for Fremantle to really make an impact and be as handy and accessible as the plastic bag. The important thing is they are free for the shop and free for the customer. Shoppers will be offered free-to-borrow, re-usable bags made by volunteers.

It has been reported that Australian consumers use about 3.92 billion plastic bags per year, and it’s up to all of us to make a difference for the health of our environment and the animal life we impact.

Boomerang Bags Fremantle are hoping that sewing groups, social groups, students and community members can help with this wonderful initiative and join on Sundays  for bag making; or create their own bags to donate. All bags must be made from recycled fabric and there is a silk screen available for branding the bags.

The market is on every Sunday from 8 am to midday at Annie Street in Beaconsfield.

WHY I LOVE LIVING IN FREMANTLE

Posted in city of fremantle, community, growers green markets, Uncategorized by freoview on June 5, 2017

It is WA DAY today when we celebrate the foundation day of Western Australia, and it’s yet again going to be a gorgeous day.

It is good to remind ourselves now and then what we love about the place we live in because we far too often complain about the negatives of life.

My visit to the Fremantle Growers Green farmers market yesterday made me aware again why I love Freo so much. There is such a great sense of community and people catching up over breakfast. Families, dogs, fresh produce, live music under a brilliant blue sky. How much better can it get.

I was barely out of my car when I bumped into Bryn Davies who often rigs himself up the mast of the Roundhouse to put new flag ropes up and makes repairs. He is studying and renovating his house, so he’s a busy boy.

I love having a chat with Farmer Damian, who has his patting sheep and ducks there for kids, as he is always down to earth and has a great sense of humour. We worked together on a couple of markets some years ago.

Then it was pollies time and receiving the warm smile from new Freo state Minister Simone McGurk and a hug from federal MP Josh Wilson, who was out food shopping with his wife Georgia and dog. Georgia works at Fremantle Press.

While there the person I have known longest in Australia crossed my path. Beautiful Michelle Broun, an Injbarndi woman who is now the curator for Aboriginal and Torrest Straight Islander art at the WA Art Gallery. She was there with her cousin Khris. I used to babysit Michelle’s sons Simon and Reuben, but now Simon has his own children and is  a teacher in Broome. Yep, I am getting old. ; >(

My mate Tom Fisher of Clancy’s fame was on stage doing fine tunes.

The foodstalls were busy so it’s not easy to have a chat with the operators, but I managed to have a few word with Nick who sells frozen yoghurt and who also builds food carts, musician and poet Dave Pensa was selling Mediterranean anti-pasto, and the always smiling Umir from Zab Salad served his yummy smelling and looking curries. You can buy them during the week at the restaurant he and his wife Kulsum have opposite Victoria Hall. Try it!

Also had a chat with Sarah and Shaun from the High Street Dispensary cafe, who also used to own Chalkys. They had their 14 month-old boy with them of course.

And last but not least I had a chat with Linda from Treacle Treat who sells Dutch Flavourites; stroopwafels, kroketten, bitterballen and the delightful tiny Dutch poffertjes pancakes. You need to try them!

Talking Dutch with Linda, who is a relatively new migrant, reminded me that I left the Netherlands 50 years ago for my first big adventure when I migrated to Germany. How time has flown and what an exciting life I have had. The grand finale is here in Freo for me, the place I love more than anywhere else in the world!

Sunday is fun day in Fremantle and tomorrow will be a good day for music, but first things first and start the day at the Growers Green Farmers Market on Lefroy Road from 8am till midday. They have live music as well!

From 2-4 pm the free courtyard music session at the Fremantle Arts Centre with Luke Dux and Atomic Lunchbox is on.

The WAM Award-winner performs stripped back, acoustic versions of his extensive catalogue of solo tunes. Joined by a line up of talented musicians, be captivated by his moody lowdown blues style and intricate guitar work.

And from 5-7 there is Folk&Roots and a great sunset at J Shed on Bathers Beach and food van Flying Falafels will be there for dinner. This is also a free family event!

It should be a very good day of community fun, so I am looking forward to it!

ROYAL REASON TO VISIT FREO’S GROWERS GREEN MARKETS

Posted in food, fremantle, growers green markets by freoview on November 2, 2016

There is now a real royal reason to visit the Fremantle Growers Green Farmers Markets on Sunday morning.

During the recent visit to W.A. by the King and Queen of the Netherlands Fremantle Treacle Treat food van owner Linda Haanskorf-de Jongh offered the Royals a gift of her delicious home-made stroopwavels, which she sells at Growers Green.

I don’t think Linda will be allowed to put the Dutch royal weapon on her van and call herself a hofleverant, but it is great recognition for this small business operator who only started Treacle Treat a couple of years ago.

Oh and a reminder to the City of Fremantle CEO, who asked me about it, that this is the stall that sells bitterballen and croquettes as well!

Well done Linda!
