School holidays are nearly here-again, so Fremantle’s Spare Parts Puppet Theatre will be showing The Night Zoo from September 22 onward.

Jamie lives in a concrete jungle, a fast-paced and busy city. From her window high above the city Jamie dreams of making friends with animals, but Mum and Dad won’t let her have a pet in the apartment. Tonight, her dreams will take her on a one-of-a-kind visit to the zoo, where she discovers the remarkable joy an animal can bring into her life. The Night Zoo explores the special connection between humans and animals and the importance of caring for another living thing.

September 22 to October 6 Monday to Saturday 10am and 1pm daily (no shows Sundays or Public Holidays) plus special Friday 6.30pm performances on Sep 28 and Oct 5.

Price: From $23 (plus booking fee)
Duration: 45 mins

SPACE FRAME FOR SPARE PARTS THEATRE

The Fremantle Spare Parts Puppet Theatre building is getting a modern facelift in form of a so-called exo-skeleton. It’s a kind of Zimmer frame for buildings, as the images above show.

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries commissioned North Fremantle Slavin Architects to help solve a problem identified with the Spare Parts building at Pioneer Park.

Slavin Architects were engaged by the Department to assess the external walls which were showing signs of potential structural instability.

Instead of demolishing and rebuilding the walls, which would have had a dramatic impact on Spare Parts future programs, Slavin Architects took a more lateral approach which was to brace the outside of the building with an ‘exo-skeleton’ or space-frame. Not only was the cost substantially lower than rebuilding the walls, but the time lost was minimal.

“The minimalist works provide an elegant and sculptural solution to a building of cultural and social significance to the City and the State.

SPARE PARTS THEATRE RENOVATIONS

Spare Parts

WA Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman has announced a $ 400,000 upgrade of the Fremantle Spare Parts Puppet Theatre at Pioneer Park.

The upgrade is only exterior with a so-called exo-skeleton being wrapped around the back of the building to strengthen it, but I hear that there might be more extensive plans, which I can not disclose yet.

Spare Parts will temporarily move to the Dolphin Theatre at the University of Western Australia in July and August.

Shaun Tan’s The Arrival will be the first performance at the Dolphin Theatre from July 1-15.

PUPPETEER NORIKO NISHIMOTO DIED

Posted in art, fremantle, spare parts puppet theatre, western australia by freoview on May 20, 2016

Noriko Nishimoto

I am sad to hear that charming Fremantle puppeteer Noriko Nishimoto has died from cancer at the age of 75.

Many people will remember the diminutive and elegant woman from her days at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre where she was the founding puppetry master.

Over the last few years I often saw Noriko on her walks through Freo in her white sneakers, always with that gentle smile on her face, and she performed in the first ever Spare Parts show I watched many years ago.

May she rest in peace.
