VOTERS DO NOT APPRECIATE THE DEMOCRATIC PRIVILEGE

Posted in city of fremantle, democract, elections, Uncategorized, voting by freoview on July 30, 2018

Saturday’s federal by-election had the lowest voter turnout in the history of compulsory voting, which was introduced a century ago, with just over 60% of people voting in Perth and Fremantle, and that is disappointing. Part of the reason for the low participation is no doubt that the Liberal party decided not to run candidates in Perth and Fremantle.

The idea of David Templeman, the WA Minister for Local Government, of trying to introduce on-line electronic voting for local elections is a good one, but his target of getting 50% of voter participation is far too low.

The problem with low voter participation is that the ‘clever’ ones among us then claim that those who were elected don’t really have a mandate because they only received a relative small percentage of the eligible votes. That is nonsense, because members get elected within the laws, rules and regulations.

In a way those who-immaturely-decide not to participate in elections also vote, as they elect to not show a preference for any of the candidates. They should be quiet and not complain afterwards then about the governments we get.

In the seat of Fremantle Labor’s Josh Wilson received 52.7% of the primary vote, so that is up by 11.7%

Greens Dorinda Cox received 16.5% of the primary votes, down 1.2% and Josh Gray of the Lib-Dems got 14%.

I consider voting an absolute privilege, so while we all are tired of more and more election campaigns and hubris, we should still make the effort to vote. The next one will be here before we know it. ; >(

Come on Josh 4 Freo team! Surely there are better spots to promote my favourite Fremantle candidate than at a rubbish bin. We all know what some cynical people believe politics are.

I voted for Josh right here at the Beacy Primary school where there is a mean sausage sizzle and cake stall going on, and very few people voting, so no long queues.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION INCOMPETENCE

Posted in city of fremantle, elections, Uncategorized, voting by freoview on October 5, 2017

The missing ballot papers saga for the Fremantle local government election appears to be more widespread, with voters in the inner city and South Fremantle also only receiving the Ward ballot paper, but not the one to elect the next Mayor of Fremantle.

I hear it is not contained to Fremantle only, but is also happening at other councils.

We already read the story of Kalgoorlie ballot papers having been sent to Nedland, 600 km away, so this is a true shambles.

Only a few years ago there was a big investigation into how the WA Electoral Commission managed to lose hundreds of votes during the federal election, so heads need to roll now as this is not acceptable.

The outcome of the mayoral election might well be challenged by either or both of the candidates. It could even delay the election.

And let’s just remind ourselves that the tax payers will have to pay for the incompetence as new ballot papers will have to be sent out.

It is unbelievable!

If you want to participate in the Federal Election, today is the very last day to enrol and put yourself on the register. You can do it on-line till  8 pm, so I encourage anyone who has just turned 18 or moved house recently to do it!

There is a high percentage of people under 30 who are not on the electoral list and we need to hear the voice of the young people as well.

This is your opportunity to give the boot to those politicians who have failed and put new people in parliament and the senate. VOTE please!

ENROL TODAY!

DISCRIMINATION AT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ELECTION FORUM

Posted in city of fremantle, election, voting by freoview on September 30, 2015

Well, well, well. This is surprising and very disappointing and I wonder what criteria were followed by the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce to have  and Election Forum about the Fremantle economy that only includes the candidates for City Ward and Hilton Ward.

That is extremely discriminatory and very offensive to all the other candidates in the other Wards who were not invited.  What was the selection of candidates based on I wonder. Blue eyes? Blond hair? Knowing someone who knows someone? It’s disgraceful as it makes the candidates in the other Wards look third rate and second class who have no idea about the economy.

This is from the Fremantle Network Facebook page:

The Fremantle Chamber of Commerce presents the 2015 Local Government Election Forum – Building The Fremantle Economy.

Local Government candidates for the City and Hilton wards will be stating their case to members of the business community about how their candidacy and platform will contribute to making Fremantle a better place to do business.
