A VERY FREMANTLE CHILDREN’S BOOK
Well-known Fremantle couple Shani Graham and Tim Darby have created a wonderful children’s book. Lady Marmalade is about one of the goats at their property.
The illustrations by Tim Darby are outstanding, fun and quirky, so make sure to buy a few books for Christmas presents.
Shani and Tim self-published the book, so the easiest way to buy it is to go to their Ecoburbia Facebook page. Do it now before it is too late!

WILD FREO EASTER STREET ARTS FESTIVAL
Only three more sleeps until the WILD FREO street arts festival begins, but one can already see some of the art around town, such as the one above on the old woolstores.
A huge, giant, enormous artwork was being sprayed onto the grass at the Esplanade , when I walked by an hour ago. That will be hard to view, unless one has a drone or goes for a ride on the Tourist Wheel.
I’ll post the full program on Good Friday, so that everyone knows where to find the artworks.

THE FREMANTLE STREET ART FESTIVAL IS BACK!
After two years of cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fremantle Street Art Festival is back, but it will be very different from previous ones.
16-18 APRIL 2022: WILD FREO PRESENTS A WEEKEND FESTIVAL OF ARTWORKS EXPLORING WA’S NATIVE ANIMALS THROUGH SANCTUARIES AND SOUNDSCAPES
Audiences will be invited to immerse their senses in creative wildlife experiences throughout the iconic streets and heritage spaces of Fremantle/Walyalup
From the heart of Fremantle – Walyalup Koort – to the Norfolk Island pines of Esplanade Reserve, the City of Fremantle presents Wild Freo, an Easter weekend of family fun where native animals take over the urban environment.
Heritage spaces, parklands and streets will be transformed into animal sanctuaries through diverse artforms including theatre, puppetry, dance, design, illustration, animation, sound, and sculpture—art and animal lovers can play and explore their way through a weekend of free and ticketed events.
City of Fremantle Festivals Coordinator Sarah Wilkinson said Wild Freo will feature works designed to reflect on how humans are threatening our native animal habitats and to inspire hope and positive change.
“Our artists reflect on how different our urban spaces were during lockdowns, when animals reclaimed spaces that human activity had pushed them out of.
“Maybe the disruption shouldn’t mean we go back to the way it was before – this is a time to reflect on how humans impact the natural environment and animal habitats and create change through art.”
Deeper Shade of Blue created by Wardandi Noongar (Aboriginal) and Ait Koedhal (Torres Strait Islander) multidisciplinary artist Tyrown Waigana and Field Design will wow as a life-size blue whale pod migrates in layers on the Esplanade Reserve, which was reclaimed from the sea in 1902.
“The deeper you look, the more you’ll find,” said Tyrown Waigana. “This experience is meant to create curiosity and reveal surprises.”
Walk through the Whaler’s Tunnel and be instantly captured by Observing Stone, the LED illumination of hundreds of bird and reptile eyes from pythons and parrots and to bobtails and blue wrens, against a stunning soundscape from Envelope Audio.
“This is an opportunity for people to imagine, ‘what mammals and birds could be here? what passes by?’” said legendary Fremantle Artist Sandy McKendrick, on the consideration behind her work.
A Particular Garden After is a work of beautiful screen prints of plants, flowers, and birds projected onto soft flowing fabrics draped from the high ceilings of the Old Customs House. Explore happy habitats and the feelings that can change as animals appear, disappear and reappear in rich, stop-motion animation.
“My work is a celebration of native flora and fauna,” said Angela Ferolla, Fremantle artist and tutor to young artists. “I hope my art will remind people of nature’s beauty – to pause and look in detail and be reminded of our role to look after it.”
Featured WA artists will include Angela Ferolla, Bryan Woltjen, Daley Rangi, Ella Hetherington, Jenessa King, Joe Leach, Karla Hart Productions, Rachel Riggs, Rebecca Riggs-Bennett, Sandy McKendrick, Sharyn Egan, Teori Shannon, Tyrown Waigana and leading local organisations and institutions including CircusWA, Envelope Audio, Field Design, John Curtin College of the Arts, WA Wildlife and Birdlife Australia.

LOCAL VET GARNETT HALL WINS FREMANTLE ASPIRE AWARD
Fremantle vet and leader in animal health wellbeing and technology Dr Garnett Hall of the Fremantle Animal Hospital has been awarded the THIS IS FREMANTLE Aspire Award 2021.
In partnership with Business Events Perth, the THIS IS FREMANTLE Aspire Award provides a $5000 scholarship to assist the winner’s personal and professional development through the attendance at an overseas conference of their choice when international travel resumes.
This year’s winner is a veterinary surgeon with 15 years of experience with small animals, dairy, beef and horses. Along with his wife Dr Sally Hall, Dr Hall owns the Fremantle Animal Hospital in Ellen Street.
In July 2021, Dr Hall launched the ‘Pet Friendly Freo’ campaign that saw over 100 local businesses sign up to improve the social inclusion of pets in Fremantle.
In February 2021, he led a major disaster response veterinary team that fought to save animals caught in the Wooroloo bushfires. Last year, he also travelled to Kangaroo Island to provide emergency care for hundreds of injured animals caught in fires.
Back in 2019, he founded the Perth-based start-up VetChip that developed implantable biosensors for animals, working to commercialise the world’s first implantable health monitors for dogs.
Dr Hall said he would be using this award to attend the Singapore Vet Show, the largest annual veterinary conference in the Southern Hemisphere, offering attendees up to 55 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE).
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the Aspire Award was a great way to showcase Fremantle innovators.
“This award is a fantastic way for us to support our star local professionals to not only continue their professional development, but also to showcase the innovative work taking place in Fremantle,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.
The THIS IS FREMANTLE Aspire Award covers travel, accommodation and event registration expenses.
Entry is open to all not-for-profit incorporated association members in the mining and resources, health, education, science and technology, business, environment and heritage, retail, and arts and culture industries, who either work or reside in the City of Fremantle.
For more information about the Aspire Awards visit businesseventsperth.com/aspire-program.

My good mate FARMER DAMIAN is at the Freo Farmers Market currently and obviously everyone there is getting very wet from the heavy showers.
He posted this photo of Maggie on his Facebook page and I just have to steal it, because it is brilliant!
