ENJOY THE WA DAY SUNDAY

WA DAY

It is going to be a beautiful mild Sunday so go out and explore gorgeous Fremantle.

The Growers Green Farmers Market is on at Fremantle College on Lefroy Road till midday for fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, pastries, yummy breakfast, lunch and coffee.

All the cafes and restaurants around Freo are open today, but some will be closed tomorrow, so take advantage of that, and the Fremantle Markets and E Shed Markets are open, as are Fremantle Prison, the Roundhouse, Shipwrecks Museum and Maritime Museum.

And at the Fishing Boat Harbour the WA DAY Festival is on all day till 8pm.

There really is no excuse to stay home, so grab the kids, the dog and hubby and head out to be part of our great Freo community.

Have fun!

FREO WA DAY FISHING BOAT HARBOUR FIREWORK

DSC_0142

The Fremantle WA DAY fireworks were not very spectacular and the crowds stayed away as well for the ten-minute explosions of colours, but funds were limited so it was a good effort to organise it by the Fishing Boat Harbour traders.

Festivities with live music continue today at our most popular fish&chips destination, so head out before the big storm arrives late today.

Here some photos I took from the gundeck at the Roundhouse.

COLOURFUL FREMANTLE WA DAY OPENING

zzzz

The Aboriginal smoking ceremony to open WA DAY at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour attracted a good crowd. It’s always nice to see so many children at these events as they are a very essential part of moving forward with the reconciliation process.

Noongar elder Neville Collard gave a welcome to country and the Wadumbah dancers performed.

Also saying hello were WA Minister Simone McGurk, Fremantle Councillor Hannah Fitzhardinge and Federal MP in waiting Josh Wilson.

There are lots of activities, including a pocket market and of course the 6pm fireworks are on.

The weather is great so don’t waste your time and stay at home to watch TV and the Dockers lose. ; >)

FREMANTLE FIREWORKS ARE BACK!

Those who missed the Fremantle fireworks on Australia Day will be delighted that the Fishing Boat Harbour traders have organised fireworks on WA DAY, June 3 from 6 pm.

The early 6pm time will be good for families with very young children, so it’s a win win.

The move by Fremantle Council to scrap the fireworks and Australia Day events and replace them with the ONE DAY concert have ben very controversial, but also been followed by other councils in Australia.

Holding fireworks on WA Dy is probably a much better idea and will be a lot less upsetting for our indigenous people, but for me personally I find fireworks a huge waste of money and would rather see a laser and projections show.

Anyway, folks, Fremantle fireworks are back!

STUPID WA OVER REGULATION

Posted in fremantle, law&order, Uncategorized, western australia by freoview on June 5, 2017

rukes 2

rules 1

Overseas tourists to Western Australia often mention that there are too many rules and regulations in our state, and that it is expensive over here.

Two large signs on the Fremantle Esplanade at the WA DAY event shows how stupid, irrelevant and inappropriate a lot of these rules are.

No drugs and alcohol. Well it is already illegal so why bother. No chairs, seats, whatever and the one that irritated me most was the rule about no professional photography.

The event was not fenced off so the Esplanade remained a public open space and hence every photographer, professional or amateur, with a pro SLR or just a mobile phone was allowed to take photos by law. I was hoping someone would try to stop me so I could have given them a blast, but no luck.

I assume that the Freo signs are just copies of what they put up at Elizabeth Quay but why bother!

WA DAY 1

Children outnumbered adults in Fremantle today as large family groups, babies and prams came to celebrate WA DAY on the Esplanade and all around town.

Some cafes were closed and others charged a public holiday surcharge, but who cares, the sun is shining, the sky is blue and it’s pretty warm for a winter’s day.

HOW FREO CELEBRATES WA DAY

Posted in community, fremantle, history, Uncategorized, western autralia by freoview on June 5, 2017

There is WA DAY entertainment at the Fremantle Esplanade all day today so go and enjoy the glorious day.

Spare Parts Theatre will be there with their puppets and Grace Barbe and band will perform in the afternoon.

There is a Freedom Fairy Show for the children, food stalls,  Bindi Bindi Dreaming, and Felicity Groom will also be performing.

A big sand sculpture will be created and the African Drumming Circle will be fun for young and old.

The Maritime Museum will have a stall and there is also the Perth Makers Market and more entertainment and music.

At Victoria Quay in Fremantle Port one of the world’s most high-tech research vessels, RV Sonne, will be open to the public.

Members of the public are invited to step on board, speak to the German and Australian marine scientists, check out the ship’s cutting-edge research technology and learn about current research campaigns in the Australian marine environment, and Australian-German research cooperation.

Have a fun WA DAY!

PHOTOS OF FREMANTLE’S WA DAY

The WA Day event at the Fremantle Esplanade was a little underwhelming as it was mainly for children, but it was still nice to see how multicultural our Australian society is.

How great to know that we live in such a peaceful country in relative harmony with all cultures, religions and skin colours.

There are still too many racists to my liking, and those who mistakingly believe they defend our nation’s values by being intolerant to other cultures.

It is good to reflect sometimes on how privileged we are living in such a stunning part of the world with so many fascinating people in our community.
