WOMEN HAVE A RIGHT TO EQUALITY!

Posted in fremantle, international women's day, women by freoview on March 8, 2016

It is INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY today, so here a small tribute to all women around the world, especially those who still have to fight for basic rights and equality. It is also a tribute to my very strong mother Annie and my equally strong sisters Marja, Bep and Anita.

I was amazed to learn last night on Q&A on ABC TV that women and girls in Australia still earn substantially less than men, even at executive levels where men on average receive $ 100,000 a year more than women in similar positions. It was also a surprised to learn that often girls receive less pocket money from their parents than their brothers do.

It’s time to let go off gender discrimination as it is ridiculous. Women rock!

INDIGENOUS LONG-DISTANT ART AT JAPINGKA

Posted in art, fremantle by freoview on August 20, 2014

Sisters Sarrita and Tarisse King have an exhibition opening at Japingka Gallery in Fremantle on 29 August.

Sarrita and Tarisse started their art careers as teenagers. Now in their mid twenties both sisters have had successful exhibitions around Australia, Europe and the USA. Their work is also appealing to younger audiences and one of Sarrita’s paintings was used on reality TV show The Block.

The sisters started with painting together on works in the one place, but now they live 2,000 kms apart. The sisters now use collaboration as a way of staying connected. They each take turns in starting a painting then send it to the other to finish. The free flow of ideas is then a surprise when they see the finished work.

I met the two young Freo designers Tamsin Richardson and Amy Moffatt this morning who started TRAM, creating prints, note and sketch books, etc.

They operate out of a lovely studio above Kakulas Sisters in Fremantle Market Street. You can see and buy their art at the Fremantle Arts Centre and Kings Park shops, and other outlets, so check them out on line: http://www.wearetram.com if you want to buy a Freo inspired gift.

IT’S CELEBRATING WOMEN DAY

Posted in fremantle by freoview on March 8, 2011

Today is INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, a day to celebrate those special people; our mothers and sisters, and our wives and lovers, present and past.

No matter how many broken hearts they have given me, I absolutely adore women, and they have a special place in my heart.

Today is also a day to reflect that there is still a lot of sexism and discrimination against women. Sexual and domestic violence, even in modern Australia, is something that still occurs daily. It is something that is totally unacceptable and I abhor.

All over the world the sex trade of children and young women keeps happening and the lacklustre attempts by the authorities are just a token. Might that be because men rule the world?

Equality is a beautiful word, but even in the workforce women are still behind men at many levels. We have come a long way, but much more needs to be done.
