COTTESLOE SCULPTURES BY THE SEA

It is not often I venture out far north but I always do make the trip to Cottesloe from Fremantle for the annual Sculptures by the Sea.

I was there at 7.30am this morning, so well before the masses arrived and there were still many works being assembled, so this is just a first impression.

The annual Cottesloe Sculptures by the Sea opened on Friday and will be on for two weeks, so make sure to ride, walk, drive or train it up the coast on the long weekend.

This is a show by Australian and international artists that compliments the all Western Australian Sculpture@Bathers in Fremantle well.

We should consider ourselves lucky to have two outstanding beach art shows at the same time.

Congratulations to Fremantle artist Olga Cironis who won the $ 10,000 scholarship prize at the Cottesloe Sculptures by the Sea!

Olga will be at the show weaving 400 metres of human hair together, so go and visit her.

It is not often I encourage people to leave Fremantle for distant shores, but the Cottesloe SCULPTURES BY THE SEA exhibition is well worth hopping on the bike or train for, or driving your car over.

There are some outstanding art works there, some quirky ones and a few not that great, but overall it is a very good show of three dimensional art.

I thoroughly enjoyed walking around early this morning before the big crowds arrive and probably will have to go back for another look in different afternoon light.

JINA LEE ART ON SHOW IN SYDNEY

Posted in art, fremantle by freoview on October 5, 2015

Jina Lee

Fremantle J Shed artist Jina Lee has just finished several stunning sculptures for Sculptures at the Sea in Sydney. The Korean born artist who works out of the Greg James studio at Bathers Beach was polishing the work this morning before they are going to be transported tomorrow.

Jina’s work is much appreciated. She sold all her sculptures at the Cottesloe Sculptures at the Sea this year and also the one she showed at Sculpture@Bathers in Fremantle.

I took these photos this morning of the delightful and very beautiful Korean sculptor Jina Lee at Greg James’ Fremantle J Shed studio on Bathers Beach. Jina is working on two artworks for the Cottesloe Sculptures by the Sea that will be on in March.

COTTESLOE SCULPTURES ARE HERE AGAIN

Posted in art, fremantle by freoview on March 5, 2014

I always like to have a quick preview of the Cottesloe SCULPTURES BY THE SEA artworks and catch up with the artists I know while they are setting up. There were a lot of works missing still and many in process of being assembled, but it looks to me as if it is going to be a really great art show on the beach. It opens officially on Friday so make the trip to Cot from Freo and have a look!

I noticed the works of two Fremantle artists, and Richie Kuhaupt‘s large bold head with a tree growing out of it, made from wooden packing pallets, stands tall. Below in the sand the boots prints work by Colin Story reminds us that we leave our marks and a legacy wherever we go, and is about the James Price Point development near Broome.

FREO SCULPTURES THAT WARM THE HEART

Posted in fremantle by freoview on March 12, 2013

There are days in Fremantle that my heart wants to burst out of my chest when I see incredible community engagement and today is one of those days. I had a first look at the SCULPURE@BATHERS exhibition of sculptures at Bathers Beach and what a lovely event it is going to be. When others speak about, and organise, placemaking workshops, the participating artists at S@B have done an amazing job at integrating their work in the landscape. There is an intimacy at Sculpture@Bathers that is lacking at the big brother Sculptures by the Sea in Cottesloe, partly because most of the works in Fremantle are not huge.

It is exiting to see only works of Western Australian artists and I sincerely hope the people of Fremantle and metropolitan Perth will support this inaugural event and turn up in droves at our city beach. It officially starts this Friday the 15th, so get on your bikes, hop on the train, or go for a stroll on the weekend and come to Bathers!

DISAPPOINTING SCULPTURES BY THE SEA

Posted in fremantle, photography by freoview on March 8, 2013

I am a big fan of the annual Sculptures by the Sea in Cottesloe, so I was keen to see what great art there is on display today. I left pretty disappointed as it is the most average one I have seen so far. There are too many trying to be clever, kitsch and mediocre pieces to make it work for me, but of course there are still many great works worth making the trip to Cot for. My favourite is the one of three large, masculine, kneeling figures by Tobi Bell. Are they praying, meditating or exercising? It’s a stunning and outstanding work.

One ‘work of art’ caught my attention. It is an ‘installation piece’ by school students who left bags, shoes and lunch boxes scattered all over the grass. This colourful piece of accidental art should become part of the exhibition.

There is now the challenge for the Western Australian artists participating in next week’s Sculpture@Bathers at Fremantle‘s Bathers beach to show their excellence.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TO CREATE ARTWORK

Posted in fremantle by freoview on December 21, 2012

Sculptor Toby Bell is trying to raise funds via crowd funding for his new 14 foot SCULPTURES BY THE SEA sculpture and has just started his kickstarter campaign. If you can spare a few dollars to help make Toby’s dream become a reality that would be great. Hopefully we’ll see it at Cottesloe beach mid next year.

Pass it on through your networks please
