WALYALUP SIGNS MAKE CENTRE MORE VISIBLE

walyalup

The Fremantle Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Arthur Head has new signs installed. It is good they have become a bit more visible as I still believe the centre should have been in a bigger and better venue in the centre of Freo. But it is a start that we hopefully can improve on in the future and have a higher profile Whadjuk Noongar venue in a more prominent location.

RFDS

Two Fremantle teams will take off from Esperance to join in the Outback Air Race to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Inner city residents Ralph Treasure and Elena Monaco are team Freo Flyers and Beaconsfield residents Jason Cotter and Leanne Mckenzie are Team Mockingjay. They will fly nearly 8000 kilometres from the south coast of Western Australia over the red centre to Queensland and from there back via Broome.

The fundraising target is $ 10,000 and already $ 4,000 was raised at a wine and dinner event at Lamonts in Cottesloe. Donations can be made on: https://oar2015.everydayhero.com/au/Mockingjay

The Outback Air Race has raised over $ 1,5 million for the RFDS since it started in 1995. It runs every 3 to 4 years and is a time trial in which 27 aircrafts take part.

URBAN ADVENTURE FOR FITNESS FANATICS

Posted in fremantle by freoview on February 16, 2014

The URBAN ADVENTURE RACE was held in Fremantle on Sunday morning. It attracted over 60 teams and more than 40 individuals, who had to run, swim, paddle and cycle their way through the West End and show how fit they are.

It was fun to watch the start at the Esplanade, the swim and paddle at Bathers Bay, and the run up to the Round House and the South Mole, before the competitors cycled through the historic streets of Freo.

A NATION THAT STOPS RACES STOPS TO CELEBRATE A RACE

Posted in australia, fremantle by freoview on November 5, 2013

On the day where a horse race stops the nation, it is important to see a sign that reminds us of the disgraceful and inhumane asylum policies Australia has. Well done you guys at the Gosford Anglican Church!

MELISSA PARKE SUPPORTS SAME SEX MARRIAGE

Posted in politics by freoview on November 22, 2010

Melissa Parke MP, member for Fremantle, has spoken out in favour of legalising gay and lesbian marriages.

Some people might feel offended by, or uncomfortable with, gay and lesbian people, and the fact they would like to get married, but who are we to judge? Surely two people who love each other should have the right to make that relationship recognised in matrimony of some kind.

If certain religions don’t want to allow church ceremonies for same sex marriages, that is their decision. There are still religions who will not marry people either who were married before and have divorced.

Love creates a special bond between two people, no matter what their sex is. Society should support them when they want to show commitment to their partners, not punish them for being different, and open about it.

It is rather disappointing that in the year 2010 we still need to have a political debate about it. One would have thought we’d grown up by now.

NORTHAM’S RACIAL HATRED DISGRACE

Posted in australia, fremantle, racism, west australian, western australia by freoview on November 5, 2010

I just started to enjoy the second day of the 2010 Fremantle Festival over a cup of coffee at the Moore&Moore Cafe, when an article on page 3 of the West Australian shocked me back into reality.

During a protest against the proposed asylum seeker detention centre in Northam, two women were wearing T-shirts with the slogans “Bomb Their Boats” and Sink Their Boats” That is absolutely disgraceful to me. How can anyone advocate bombing and sinking boats full of men, women and children? What an inhumane, fascist, and selfish attitude is that!

One of the women, Belinda McKinnon, claims that refugees committed an illegal act when trying to enter Australia, while the fact is that under international law asylum seekers can seek refuge in any country they like.

‘Ladies’, you are inciting racial hatred.  THAT is illegal in Australia. You are a disgrace to this nation.
