LET’S HAVE A ROE 8 EXHIBITION!

Posted in community, democracy, election, fremantle, perth freight link by freoview on March 13, 2017

The Save Beeliar Wetlands and Roe 8-Perth Freight Link community protest has been so successful that I believe there should be an exhibition of photos and videos of what happened over the last years.

Thousands of photos were taken and hours of video recorded and that should not be lost but end up in the Fremantle history library, but first in a big exhibition at the Moores building.

People power had a big impact on the W.A. election on Saturday and there is no doubt in my mind that Labor’s Lisa O’Malley won the seat of Bicton because of the Roe 8 issues.

Saturday’s election was not so much about the Labor win but more about democracy and how we all can make a difference when we stand up for what we believe in. It takes guts to do that and I greatly admire those who never protested before but who took on leadership because they wanted to leave their children a better place.

Forget all the politics and parties and all the negativity and see the very positive message the Roe 8 community protest has delivered. It is about us the people! We are not numbers. We are passionate people who care about our environment and community and we know we are just the custodians for a short time. That brings with it a great responsibility to look after our planet for future generations.

Well done all and a great strong and deep message for all politicians in Australia.

Let’s have that exhibition!

Toby at the Fremantle Arts Centre from 2-4 today

It’s going to be a delightful 34 degrees this long weekend Sunday so no excuse whatsoever to stay at home.

There is plenty to do in beautiful Fremantle and tough decisions will have to be made.

The Growers Green Farmers Market is on from 8-12, not far from there the Men’s Shed has Open Day and a tools auction and from 10-11 there is the Bridge Walk Roe 8 protest.

Two great concerts this afternoon. The free Fremantle Arts Centre concert with the powerful Toby at 2 pm and at 3 pm sublime Dutch violinist Rudolf Koelman plays with the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra at the Townhall.

ROE 8 BRIDGE WALK PROTEST

There will be another protest against the Perth Freight Link and Roe 8, 9, 10 highway this Sunday March 5 at 10 am. It is organised by concerned North and East Fremantle residents who will be subjected to huge daily traffic congestion, pollution and noise if the highway and tunnel get built.

It will be a bridge walk to show the missing link in the flawed government process that will see traffic bottlenecking at the Stirling Bridge.

Meet at Sorrel Park in North Fremantle or Kitson Park in East Fremantle.

There is a big rally protest against ROE 8 tomorrow, Sunday February 26 at 1 pm at Kings Square.

It’s going to be a lot cooler than today so bring the kids and dogs, the grandparents, neighbours and friends!

Unfortunately I can’t be there as I am looking after a friend’s shop, so if anyone wants to email me a nice big crowd shot I’ll post it on Freo’s View when I get home late afternoon. Email: roel.loopers@iinet.net.au

NORTH FREO ROE 8 PROTEST

Posted in fremantle, perth freight link, roe 8 highway by freoview on February 22, 2017

The good people of North Fremantle protested against the Roe 8 highway and Perth Freight Link on Wednesday afternoon in the knowledge that the unresolved last link into the port will mean more and longer traffic congestion in the North Freo township.

Experts predict an increase of vehicles of one-third if a tunnel ends three kilometres from the port, which would mean a traffic, pollution and noise disaster for North Freo.

UNFAIR ROE 8 ATTACKS ON FREMANTLE HERALD

Posted in fremantle, fremantle herald, media, newspaper by freoview on February 15, 2017

I am disappointed to hear that the Fremantle Herald has received a lot of negative calls and emails regarding the Liberal Party wrap around they published a few weeks ago, which promoted the Perth Freight Link/Roe 8 highway project. People even told the Chook to no longer deliver the paper to them.

The Fremantle Herald is a very important institution for our city. It is so iconic that it should be heritage listed and it does not deserve the unwarranted attacks by narrow-focussed people.

It also published a wrap around by the Labor Party against the Roe 8/PFL project, so that pretty much balances it out.

Simple fact is that a small community paper like the Herald only can operate because of advertising revenue. Without substantial ads it can not pay staff and delivery people and we all would miss out on our only independent local paper.

Unlike our major daily newspaper that tries to brainwash us with right-wing opinion pieces by Andrew Bolt, Miranda Devine and Paul Murray the Chook is nowadays quite balanced, after a period of being extremely negative about the City of Fremantle.

Newspapers do not endorse the companies that advertise with them. An advertisement in the Herald for a cafe or restaurant does not mean it recommends you go there or that the food is great. If the Herald only published advertisement from companies and products they endorse, they would not survive. It’s as simple as that!

Fact is that the Herald does not get several pages of advertising each week from major department and retail stores, because we don’t have any in the Chook’s distribution area, so our local paper is struggling to survive, as many of our traders are.

I love Fremantle because of the many passionate and caring people and I am very impressed with the Beeliar Wetlands daily protest they have kept up, but to say that the Herald cannot publish ads of political parties you don’t agree with is very Hanson/Trumpish and it is a very unrealistic stand to take.

The Herald deserves a fair go and our support because without it Fremantle would be poorer for it.

IT IS OKAY TO NOT AGREE!

I am very disappointed that social media brings out so much negativity and bullies and name-calling as there is absolutely no need for it. It is okay to disagree and have a different opinion but it is not okay to express that by making personal and unwarranted attacks on those who disagree with you.

The cancellation of the Australia Day fireworks by the City of Fremantle has resulted in vile attacks on Fremantle Council and more specifically Mayor Brad Pettitt and he does not deserve that.

As the Mayor Brad Pettitt is the spokesperson for Fremantle Council but he does not and can not under the local government act make dictatorial decisions on his own. The Australia Day decision was made by full council and required a majority vote.

To claim that 99.9 per cent of Fremantle people are against the Council decision is not based on any facts or surveys, so why make that claim? Facts are these: 15,000 people attended yesterday’s One Day in Freo concert, 1,300 attended the Nyoongar smoking ceremony at the Roundhouse, and  60 people attended the pro Australia Day rally the day before. And 5223 people viewed my photos of the smoking ceremony here on Freo’s View and many others on Facebook.

The same applies to the Roe 8 protests. You want Roe 8 and believe it will be good for traffic and some local communities. Fine, you have every right to express and support that, but please do not call these genuinely concerned people the unwashed, dreadlock, dole bludgers, etc. as the protestors represent a big cross section of our community. They are business people, mums and dads, pensioners, etc. and not some leftwing loonies.

It is healthy to disagree and it is great that we live in a country where we can openly express our opinions and feelings, but we can do so in a mature and rational way without making personal, defamatory and insulting attacks on people who stand up for what they believe is right. We are better than that!
