BIG BICYCLE RACE IN FREO TODAY!

Posted in cycling, fremantle, sport, tour de perth by freoview on March 26, 2015

The South Metropolitan Police have announced that they will enforce helmet bike laws in Fremantle today but that won’t affect the speeding riders in the TOUR DE PERTH this evening. They always wear helmets.

Stage 1-Fremantle Prologue will be held from 6 pm with start and finish at the Esplanade and riders going around very tight corners at Mouat, Croke and Cliff streets at high speeds.

It is a great spectacle that deserves far more spectators than it had last year, so forget the TV for a few hours and support this event.

BAKE IN THE KITCHEN, NOT ON THE BEACH!

refusing to bake

The Refusing to Bake – Sale in front of Kidogo Arthouse on Fremantle Bathers Beach is a Christmas arts market that is designed to generate opportunities for local artists and designers to present and sell their work, whilst raising awareness for sun safe behaviour.

Stall holders will be setting up and preparing their stalls for fun and safety in the sun! Come and join in on Sunday 7th December from 10am – 4pm.

Over 20 stalls will range with a variety of goods from ceramic jewellery, to lanterns and sun safe beachwear.

Their will be face painting for the kids, food and drinks vendors and local creative acts will be performing through out the day around the theme ‘fun and safety in the sun’.

Amongst those will be the upcoming project group ‘Busker get’s a gig’, dance performances and the head lining Fremantle based drummers group Wasamba.

Sounds like a lot of fun to do before heading of to George Street for the festival there.

PREMATURE SHARK PROTECTION CALL

Posted in city of fremantle by freoview on September 8, 2014

Prevention is a good thing in most instances, but the call for shark protection at Fremantle’s Bathers Beach by local business people seems very premature to me.

Henry Liascos, the owner of Cicerello’s, Char Char Bull, and the soon to be opened Bathers Beach House tavern, and Kidogo Arthouse owner Joanna Robertson, called for some form of shark protection at the small city beach in today’s West Australian.

In the 25 years that I have visited Bathers Beach I have never seen a shark, but quite a few dolphins, and the beach is not very popular at all, even in summer with less than 100 people going for a swim there.

There is no doubt that two new bars will attract more people to the area but will they come to have a swim or just watch the sunset while having a drink?

To make Bathers Beach a sun baking destination, it would need a public toilet and change rooms and that is not going to happen in a hurry, because the City of Fremantle was not far-sighted enough to combine the Kelp Bar toilets with public toilets, and that was a very silly and short-sighted planning decision by Council.
