SILVERLEAF BUYS FREMANTLE NEWPORT HOTEL

Posted in architecture, city of fremantle, development, food, heritage, Uncategorized by freoview on September 17, 2018

The hospitality grapevine in Fremantle is abuzz today with the yet unconfirmed rumours that Silverleaf Investments has bought the Newport Hotel on the Cappuccino Strip.

The Newport back entrance comes out onto Paddy Troy Lane and is adjacent to the Manning Building, which Silverleaf will be developing into a tavern, micro brewery, retail, etc., so it makes sense for the company to try to control that rundown part of town and improve it.

Sad news to hear that the Miss Chats bar in historic High Street has closed. It appeared to be doing well, so it’s a shame a small bar in the West End has disappeared.

But work has already started on the Republic of Fremantle tavern and gin distillery just up the road at Pakenham Street, so that will help activate the area during the evenings. It is due to open late this year.

MONTHLY COMEDY SHOW AT FREO’S NEWPORT HOTEL

Posted in city of fremantle, entertainment, Uncategorized by freoview on October 9, 2017

There is a new comedy gig in Fremantle every second Tuesday of the month at the Newport Hotel from 7.30 pm.

Flying Camel Comedy runs an open mic night for amateur comedians at Newport’s Two Sparrows bar.

This is a show consisting of amateur comedians, first timers, and semi professionals. Entry is free.

It’s a night designed for comedians to test new material, to get stage experience, and a chance for beginners to try their hand at comedy for the first time.

One of Flying Camel’s big goals is to provide newcomers with a friendly and welcoming environment where they can have a go at stand up comedy with a view to foster local talent and promote local comedians.

It’s on tomorrow night, October 10, so go and check it out and have a good laugh.

FREO’S COLOURFUL GOOD, BAD AND UGLY

Posted in art, fremantle, western australia by freoview on September 12, 2016

colour-1

I promised to keep you up to date with the good, the bad, and the ugly in Fremantle, so here three examples of it I found on a walk through Fremantle yesterday.

The display at the Chemist Warehouse is ugly, the tagging on the bins in front of the graffiti mural is bad, and at least the back of the Newport Hotel is very attractive.

Talking about attractive, go and have a look at the lovely new Herberts bar upstairs at the Federal Hotel(formerly Rosy O’Grady). It’s very cosy! I’ll do a photo blog on it as soon as I get permission from them.

COLOUR IN FREO’S PADDY TROY MALL

Posted in art, fremantle, western australia by freoview on July 29, 2016

It is nice to see a bit of colour in the drab Paddy Troy Lane in Fremantle. The Newport Hotel did these murals that look stunning and there is other graffiti art on other buildings, while bollards and trees have been covered with colourful ropes.

The lane runs parallel to the Cappuccino Strip and William Street and the lovely Grumpy Sailor cafe is also there. Check it out!

ALFRESCO POPULAR IN FREMANTLE

Posted in fremantle, hospitality, tourism by freoview on December 16, 2015

alfresco 1 alfresco 2

Alfresco is the new black in Fremantle with new so-called parklets and other outdoor eating and drinking areas popping up all around town. The Newport Hotel on the Cappuccino Strip and the Ball&Chain bar at the Esplanade Hotel created two good-looking ones.
