Wow! That was the biggest crowd I have seen on Fremantle’s Monument Hill for the ANZAC Day dawn service.

It is always a very solemn event and so good to see so many young people and families getting up in the dark to pay their respect.

ANZAC DAY in Fremantle will start tomorrow with the dawn service at Monument Hill at 5.50 am. After that there is a lovely service in North Fremantle at 9am just opposite Mojos.

The ANZAC parade through the streets of Fremantle will start at 10.15am from the Esplanade, where it will also finish with a service. There is even two up!

Some cafes, like the Moore&Moore will be closed, but Chalkys and the Attic are open and so will be many others.

“Bill Renton” Two Up Ring, “Jimmy Paton” Bar, AFL Game on TV, Bouncy Castle and Face Painting for the kids and Sausage Sizzle. The Fremantle City RSL Sub Branch, the second oldest RSL Sub Branch in WA (formed in 1923) is holding an ANZAC Day Commemoration in the Park Event at Esplanade Reserve, Marine Terrace, Fremantle from 11:30am to 16:30pm on ANZAC Day the 25th April 2018.
The event will follow the Fremantle ANZAC Day Parade that will begin at 10:15am in Esplanade Reserve directly adjacent to our ANZAC Day Commemorations in the Park event, which will entail;
• The Freedom (Face Painting) Fairies (for the kids);
• A Bouncy Castle and Wacky Wagon (also for the kids);
• The “Jimmy Paton” Bar;
• The “Bill Renton” Two-Up Ring;
• A Sausage Sizzle, and

NEW SPANISH PORT FACILITIES GOOD FOR FREO

Posted in city of fremantle, fremantle port, maritime, Uncategorized by freoview on February 25, 2018

Spanish shipbuilder Navantia is considering spending millions of dollars on building new port facilities south of Fremantle at Henderson.

The new port would service big LNG tankers and navy vessels, but it would need to make substantial expansion to the dry dock facilities.

At present the multinational oil and gas  giants mostly send their LNG tankers to Singapore for maintenance, but Navantia believes they could do that closer to the oil and gas fields on the WA west coast.

It would be nice to create more employment close to Fremantle as that might trigger residential relocation of workers to our port city.

Interesting to note a protest leaflet by the Maritime Union of Australia against the push for a new outer harbour at Kwinana by Kwinana Mayor Carol Adam. The MUA claims it would cost 6,000 jobs and that Fremantle Port believes a new port is not needed until 2035-2040.

It is very busy in Freo Port today with two cruiseliners I had not seen before; the Europa and the Seven Seas Navigator are at berth at Victoria Quay and three container ships and one RoRo vessel at North Quay.

BRITISH HMS SUTHERLAND IN FREMANTLE PORT

Sutherland

The British frigate HMS Sutherland arrived in Fremantle Port on Thursday morning with all guns blazing.

We were surprised at the Roundhouse to unexpectedly hear the salute, which is a 16th century tradition when war ships entered foreign ports. It was to show that they had emptied all their guns and were no threat.

The HMS Sutherland is the first British navy ship to visit Australia in five years. It is a type 23 frigate and the 13th ship in the Duke class.

Fremantle’s Victoria Quay was buzzing with activity this morning with hundreds of people boarding the Rottnest Island Express and Sealink ferries, among them former WA Premier Peter Dowding and wife Benita and former PR guru Chris Lewis and wife Pam.

The unusual sight of a drill rig and navy frigate added to the attraction.

The drill rig is on board the research vessel Joides Resolution, on an expedition into Cretaceous Climate and Tectonics, as part of her International Ocean Discovery Program.

The vessel drills into the ocean floors to collect and study core samples and is funded by the National Science Foundation.

The MHAS Newcastle is a regular visitor to Fremantle Port, so welcome to you all!

The first thing I do most mornings is drive onto the Fremantle South Mole to have a look at the activity in port.

This morning a French navy frigate arrived and turned around in the harbour, so here some photos of it.

I did not find anything about the vessel on the Fremantle Port website, so don’t know the name of the ship or the duration of her stay in port.
