MelbourneCup on the roof

I do realise this is very early notice, but I do it because it will be very special to be one of the first to enjoy the Fremantle National Hotel‘s new rooftop bar.

Three hours in the sun with yummy food and rinks, live entertainment and of course a live telecast from the Melbourne Cup.

See details above on the poster.

MELBOURNE CUP AT CLANCY’S

Feel like doing something in Fremantle on Melbourne Cup Day? Why not go to Clancy’s Fish Pub and watch the horses on the big screens there inside and outside.

The most exciting part is the Fried Mice competition after the races where local heroes eat hot fried chillies filled with cream cheese. It’s a great excuse to drink more cold beer afterwards.

There are sweeps and hobby horse races and live music. Doors open at 10 am and the seafood platters are great!

THE MELBOURNE CUP PUB THAT MAKES YOU CRY

Clancy's Cup Day

Tomorrow is the day where Australia stops to watch a horse race. The Melbourne Cup is such a tradition that many people take the day off to go out for a long lunch and watch the big race on big screens in pubs and clubs.

Clancy’s Fish Pub in Fremantle always puts up a special treat with sweeps, hobby horse races, live music, the famous seafood platters and the feared Fried Mice Competition. The latter is for the brave and foolish who like it very hot, as fried mice are deepfried large chillis stuffed with cream cheese. Quite yummy once you get over the first shock and your tear sacks are shriveled dry. ; > )

Doors open at 10.30 so make it a day out at Freo’s favourite family pub.

A NATION THAT STOPS RACES STOPS TO CELEBRATE A RACE

Posted in australia, fremantle by freoview on November 5, 2013

On the day where a horse race stops the nation, it is important to see a sign that reminds us of the disgraceful and inhumane asylum policies Australia has. Well done you guys at the Gosford Anglican Church!

FREO MELBOURNE CUP FIZZER

Posted in australia, fremantle by freoview on November 5, 2013

It was much more quiet in Fremantle for Melbourne Cup day than in previous years with not many dressed up people on the streets. I checked out Clancys and the numbers were well down from last year and the years before and the atmosphere was quite subdued as well. Benny’s was not full either. Has Freo lost its appetite to party?

Melbourne Cup favourites don’t often win, so it was nice to see the Gai Waterhouse horse Fiorente win, while the horse I put ten dollars on, Red Cadeaux, came second and returned $ 57.00. Nice to have a small win for a change, and interesting to note that none of the experts in the West Australian had the horse in the first three.

The Clancys mob backed Dandino in huge numbers, maybe because of the favourite write-up in today’s West.

The next big sporting event in Australia is the Boxing Day test match. Something I love watching.

EVENTS THAT MAKE FREO AND AUSTRALIA SPECIAL

Posted in australia, fremantle by freoview on September 29, 2012

Today is a special day in Australia. It’s AFL Grand Final day. Although I am not a fanatical football or sports fan I always watch the AFL final, as I do the Melbourne Cup horse race and the Boxing Day cricket test match. They are historic and significant days for me where we celebrate Australia.

It made me think of the stand out days in Fremantle for me and I can’t get passed the Blessing of the Fleet as one of my favourites. I used to love St Patricks Day when there was still a parade through Freo, but now it’s only drinking in the pub stuff that does not inspire me much at all.

On the heels of these two events come the Fremantle Festival Parade, The Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta, the Easter weekend Street Art Festival and the Wardarnji Aboriginal Festival. All great events that make Freo special, and so is Australia Day and the fireworks over Bathers Beach.

I am also a huge fan of the free Sunday concerts at the Fremantle Art Centre and of the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra Christmas Proms there, as I am of the Indian Food Festival on the Esplanade.

To paraphrase Freo councillor Rachel Pemberton, if you are bored in Freo it means you are not getting out much. Come join the fun, meet new people, be part of your community!

Tomorrow at 10 am is the start of the Gentlemen’s Vintage Bicycle Ride at the Fremantle Art Centre!

NOT THE SAME OLD CUP ANYMORE

Posted in fremantle by freoview on November 1, 2011

A message to people afraid of change. Nothing remains the same, as I observed again today during Melbourne Cup festivities. While in the past Fremantle was abuzz till late afternoon, today most parties died pretty soon and by 3pm most pubs were pretty empty. I was at Clancys for the race and had a look at Rosy O’Grady and Little Creatures on my way home.

It was even less fun at Clancys than it used to be in the past, I thought. Sure, the nose to nose finish of the big race excited the smaller than usual crowd, then there was not much for a while, the horse race decided by a dice is a tradition, and so it the Fried Mice eating competition, when those with enough Dutch courage eat deep fried Jallapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese. It’s a good excuse to drink even more after the contest, when the mouths are burning like hell on fire.

My horse is stumbling along the Nullarbor to try to get away from angry punters who backed it. But I won $ 40 in the Sweepstakes, so I did better than most.

LOOPY MELBOURNE CUP TIPS

Posted in fremantle by freoview on October 31, 2011

It has been a tradition for many years that I supply my friends with tips for the Melbourne Cup, so this year I looked deep and hard for clues all over Fremantle and beyond. I gazed at stars, looked into crystal balls and empty wine glasses, talked to psychics, mind readers, and horse whisperers, to make sure I was well informed.

Let me make it clear that this year’s Cup race is more unpredictable than ever, and I personally blame Qantas for that. The Queen’s visit to Australia might also have upset some horses, paranoid of being bitten my Her Maj’s corgis, so it could get messy tomorrow at Flemington.

* Americain does not do it for me. We used to have steak Americain in Holland when I was a child. It was minced meat, not horse I think.

* Jukebox Jury will have many fans in retirement villages and RSL clubs, so lots of pennies will be put on her.

* Drunken Sailor will have huge following at yacht clubs around the nation. It might have had a change if it could stand on two legs, let alone gallop on four.

* Unusual Suspect is a great bet for the W.A. Police Force who will spend their well-earned CHOGM overtime money on this horse.

* Presedence will be my bet this year, as trainer Bart Cummings always pulls a bunny out of the hat on big occasions.

* Lost in the Moment is for the star gazing lovely Librans out there. It might not win, but it will still feel good to see it floating in the air.

* At First Sight is a big no-no for me, as it reminds me too much of falling in love and broken hearts.

* Tullamore needs dew, so for that horse the race starts far too late. It might have had a chance if the Cup was run at 6 a.m.

* Older Than Time. This world heritage listed horse will remain just an impressive part of Melbourne Cup history.

Jockeys and trainers will tell you it’s all about one race at the time, while for those of us who speak horse language, the message is loud and clear that it is one stride at the time.

Will you be much richer tomorrow just after noon W.A. time? Very likely in experience only, and you will tell yourself, like you did last year and the years before, to never bet on the Melbourne Cup ever again.

Good luck and have fun! I’ll be at Fremantle’s Clancys of course.
