It is a shame Fremantle will miss out on hosting the first Western Australian International Stone Sculpture Symposium that is being organised by J Shed artist Jina Lee, who just returned from a stone sculpture symposium in Italy.

The WAISSS will be held somewhere in the City of Melville, so I’ll keep you posted when I get more information.

These symposiums are very popular and attract many visitors so this is a loss for Fremantle.

Two arty photos I took this morning in Fremantle. The top one is new art by J Shed sculptor Greg James in front of the door to stone artist Jina Lee‘s studio there.

The bottom photo is of footprints in the Whalers Tunnel.

EARLY MORNING IN THE FREO WEST END

we 5

we 1

I had time left between having an early coffee and reading the West Australian and Fremantle Herald before my meeting with a designer about the planned new historic interpretive displays at the Roundhouse, so I had a walk around the West End where I took the photos above.

A group of people attending an art class on the corner of Cliff and High streets, a colourful alfresco cafe in High, a crane signalling rare new development in the heritage-listed West End and a colourful reflection at J Shed on Bathers Beach at the new temporary studio of stone sculptor Jina Lee. Make sure to visit her and all the other Arthur’s Head artists soon!

FREO J SHED ARTIST JINA LEE IN THE MEDIA LIMELIGHT

Jina Lee

Great to see Fremantle J Shed artist Jina Lee getting a big photo in the Sunday Times today.

The Korean-born artist is an outstanding sculptor who travels all over the world to create stunning stone carvings. At the moment she is in New Zealand for a sculpture event, after having returned from Italy only recently.

The work in the Sunday Times photo is for the Cottesloe Sculpture by the Sea, so go and have a look at it. It’s on from March 2-19.

Jina is one of the most delightful down to earth people one can ever meet and can be seen grinding, chiselling and polishing behind the Greg James studios at J Shed on Bathers Beach most days when she is in town.

She won the $ 10,000 Rio Tinto Emerging Sculptor Mentorship 2017.

FREO’S J SHED ARTISTS MAKE THEIR MARK

Posted in art, bathers beach, city of fremantle, j shed, Uncategorized by freoview on October 10, 2017

Diego

Sometime local artists are undervalued because we take them a bit for granted, and that seems to be the case with the Fremantle J Shed artists at Bathers Beach.

Artist Greg James has just finished another bronze sculpture for Busselton. It will be his fourth artwork for the main street there and two more are commissioned, so that will make the main stretch of Busselton into the Greg James art boulevard.

Artist Lesley Barrett, who works out of J Shed has won the Pemberton art prize and artist Yuko Takahashi, who also creates at J Shed won the Claremont art prize.

And in the meantime J Shed artist Jina Lee has been creating stone sculptures in Italy for a few weeks.

Greg James’ Diego sculpture is about the Spanish settlers to Busselton who introduced olives and wine grapes in the region. It took over 12 months to create the work that weights 310 kilo.

Artist David Johansen, he on the right, was the model for the face of Diego.

Greg James’ next artwork is already on the go and will be a sculpture of Edmund Rice for the Christian Brothers School in Fremantle.

SCULPTURE@BATHERS FLAMING FINALE

Posted in art, bathers beach, fremantle, sculpture@bathers by freoview on March 11, 2017

It finally is election day. I am so happy the pathetic campaign of buying voters with empty promises is over and the likelihood of a change in government.

It is also the last two days of the Fremantle  Sculpture@Bathers show, so go and see the sculptures by 85 Western Australian artists, like the beautiful stone work above by J Shed artist Jina Lee.

S@B ends with a flaming finale on Sunday from 6 pm when Replants artist Bruce Abbott sets fire to the 35 jarrah trees on Bathers Beach.

The Cottesloe Sculptures by the Sea is still on for another week and has many Freo artists represented, so check that out as well.

GREAT OPENING OF JINA LEE SHOW AT J SHED

Posted in art, arthur head, culture, fremantle, j shed, JINA LEE by freoview on October 30, 2016

I rarely post photos of exhibition openings but will make an exception for the Stone Dreaming show by Jina Lee at the Greg James Sculpture Gallery in J Shed at Bathers Beach because this is a very special location and Jina is a very special person and outstanding artist.

Last night showed what a perfect space this is for art exhibitions and other art related events and that a small cafe on the side could well attract a lot of people.

Let’s hope the City of Fremantle and Sunset Events see the light and realise this is not an appropriate location for a tavern and outdoor music venue, as the WAPC has already ruled.

An art related community space is perfect and Greg James announced he has just secured an exhibition in November with the women who won this year’s Australian Photography Portrait Prize.

STUNNING JINA LEE ART ON SHOW AT J SHED

Jina Lee is a Korean-born sculptor who creates stunning art at J Shed in Fremantle. On Saturday October 29 at 5 pm she will have the opening of her solo show at the Greg James Gallery at J Shed on Bathers Beach.

Come join us to support this delightful artist who makes incredibly beautiful and sensual stone work that call out to be touched. There is so much tranquility in Lee’s work that is hard to describe, so come see it for yourselves!

I love Jina’s work and so do many art lovers as her work at the Sculptures on the Beach in Cottesloe and Sydney always sell, as did the one she exhibited at the last Sculpture@Bathers show in Freo.
