EQUALITY IS RESPECT FOR WOMEN

Posted in fremantle, western australia, women by freoview on March 8, 2017

It is International Women’s Day today, so a good opportunity to celebrate all the great and strong women all over the world.

In Fremantle we are lucky to be represented in State Parliament by Simone McGurk and Lyn McLaren, and we have three female Councillors in Hannah Fitzhardinge, Ingrid Waltham and Rachel Pemberton.

W.A very first female Senator Dorothy Tangny is recognised in a mural at the Norfolk Hotel.

Notre Dame University is also lead by a female Vice Chancellor Celia Hammond and the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce CEO is Olwyn Williams.

There is an abundance of wonderful, strong women in Fremantle who are community leaders in their own right.

Equality remains a dream unfortunately when women still get paid less than men and the top positions in Australia are predominantly occupied by men. That needs to change!

I am not a fan of quotas though because I believe women can make it on their own merit. Quotas are a bit of tokenism to make political parties, or governments look good.

I do recognise however that it is difficult for women to climb the corporate and political ladders when the majority of decision-makers are men.

Today is a day for women to celebrate their achievements and for men to contemplate why women are still not treated the same in 2017 and why there is still so much domestic violence against women.

We need to do a whole lot better and that starts with one simple word. RESPECT!

WOMEN HAVE A RIGHT TO EQUALITY!

Posted in fremantle, international women's day, women by freoview on March 8, 2016

It is INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY today, so here a small tribute to all women around the world, especially those who still have to fight for basic rights and equality. It is also a tribute to my very strong mother Annie and my equally strong sisters Marja, Bep and Anita.

I was amazed to learn last night on Q&A on ABC TV that women and girls in Australia still earn substantially less than men, even at executive levels where men on average receive $ 100,000 a year more than women in similar positions. It was also a surprised to learn that often girls receive less pocket money from their parents than their brothers do.

It’s time to let go off gender discrimination as it is ridiculous. Women rock!

Is a beach photo still a so-called street photo? Henry Cartier-Bresson is no longer around to make a judgment call, so I just claim it is.

Shot at Bathers Beach, Fremantle today.

NECTAR 2013 CELEBRATING WOMEN

Posted in fremantle by freoview on February 6, 2013

I received following email from the delightful Kylie Wheatley:

I am very excited about NECTAR 2013.  After 4 yrs of holding it in Fremantle I found myself in a position of little support from the City for the event and was about to cancel it when the City of Cockburn offered me a new home at the gorgeous Manning Park, generous funding and much in-house support.  So we have gone full steam ahead with a 2 day event.  Friday the 8th of March 2013 is our Nectar Dinner in my Red Tent celebrating International Women’s Day and raising money for the named fund “Nectar for Women” with the Fremantle Foundation.

Once again Aria award winner Kavisha Mazzella with delight us with her incredible talent.  Donna Simpson from the 4 time Aria award winning West Australian band The Waifs will give an intimate solo performance.  Donna now calls Hammy Hill home and we are so delighted and honoured to have her.

Clancy’s Fish Pub is once again supporting the event with a fantastic 4 course meal for ticket holders.

Saturday see’s the return of the FIESTA I first held at the Fremantle Arts Centre.  Dr Carmen Lawrence will open the event.  This will be followed with Inner Sky with Kavisha Mazzella.
On the  Verandah of the Azelia Ley Homestead Museum at Manning Park, we will run the first Nectar Writers and Poets area, showcasing local WA women authors.  Workshops on self publishing, book signings and sales as well as a 12pm-2pm readings from the writers in the Red Tent are on  the program.

A Death Cafe will operate from 1pm – 3pm in the Sacred Space Lounge. At Death Cafes people come together in a relaxed and safe setting to discuss death, drink tea and eat delicious cake.
The objective of Death Cafe is “To increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives”.  For more info on this remarkable movement see http://www.deathcafe.com/p/what-is-death-cafe.html.   Ava Reyerson from Passionate Life Consulting is facilitating this wonderful new initiative.
Newborn Mums are running a birth workshop from 11am – 1pm, you can book this through remarkable local mother Julia Jones http://www.newbornmothers.com.au/
Hidden Pantry, The Village Cafe, and Clancy’s will continue to keep the good food coming on Saturday and an amazing line up music and stalls representing local women in small business, arts and therapies will dot the park.
Fairy Sandie from Lady Bird Entertainment will be weaving her magic for the wee ones all day.

So that is Nectar is a wrap for 2013…still more to be announced and we have an incredible auction of donated items that will raise money.  To see more, read more or get involved please check out the website www.nectarfestival.com.au and the facebook page for updates.

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY!

Posted in fremantle by freoview on March 8, 2012

The celebrations for International Women’s Day are on all over the world, but I have been wondering if we really have achieved equality, or are even close to it.

I think often about that on weekends when hordes of Lycra clad males arrive on their bicycles in Fremantle in the morning. Many of those must be fathers, so who are feeding the kids breakfast and look after them? Women of course!

We still see only a minute percentage of the female workforce making it to the top as CEOs and managers, or on boards of companies, so macho still rules the corporate world, and the same happens in our governments.

I adore women of all ages and races, and have deep respect for strong and intelligent ones. Women have a different perspective on life, and I hope it will be listened to more often and at higher levels of our society. Male dominance is not desirable, so hopefully all the great women out there will be judged on merit and get the positions they deserve.

Happy International Women’s Day to all you gorgeous beings!
