FREMANTLE FAMILY FUN AT ESPLANADE

EYP

Fantastic to see so many families at the Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza skate park and the Winter Festival ice rink this morning, and the food stalls were also doing a roaring trade.

It also makes for happy trading in the Fishing Boat Harbour, so that is all good for the traders down that way and hopefully also for other cbd businesses.

The weather will be good for another few days so take advantage of it and head out to the Esplanade before the rain returns.

FREO TRADERS POSITIVE ABOUT WINTER GARDEN FESTIVAL

Posted in city of fremantle, festival, hospitality, reatil by freoview on August 8, 2015

A survey by the City of Fremantle of Fremantle traders on the impact of the Winter Garden Festival on the Esplanade during the month of July has been very positive:

74% of respondents believed there were positive flow on effects for the wider business community of Fremantle (48% Agree, 26% Strongly Agree)
80% of respondents said they would want it to return next year, 0% said no, 20% were indifferent.
55% of respondent reported an increase of foot traffic in their store (18.5% no change)
44% said they had an increase on trading from last year same school holidays (25% no change)

There is no doubt thousands of people flocked to the festival and it would be nice to see the figures on how many people bought tickets for the icerink and for the big slide. It would also be good to see a survey of the food stalls to find out if it was a financial success for them as well.

I liked the Winter Garden festival but would love to see some real snow there and the lay-out should be changed to make it more cohesive. The food stalls were too far away and the events at the teepee should have been to the south of the icerink closer to the slide.

I hear the City is considering putting the Winter Garden in the carpark near the Youth Plaza next year because of problems with flooding of the area where the festival was held this year.

WARM UP AT FREO WINTER FESTIVAL

winter fire

Stay warm! It was cold this morning just 2.6 degrees when I got up at 4.30 am.

Sitting around the fire and toasting marshmallows is a good option at the Fremantle WINTER GARDEN festival.

DOUBLE STANDARDS AT FREO WINTER FESTIVAL

Posted in city of fremantle, festival by freoview on July 10, 2015

I am surprised to read in the Fremantle Herald today that the food stall holders at the WINTER GARDEN Festival on the Esplanade complain that they barely earn the money to pay the rent.

As far as I understand it the food stalls idea with local traders, instead of market stall operators, came from BID and was meant to support local businesses. The Winter Garden operators receive five years rent-free use of the Esplanade from the City of Fremantle, so why do small local businesses have to pay rent to participate and enhance the festival?

FREO’S WINTER FESTIVAL AFFECTED BY WINTER RAIN

Posted in city of fremantle, festival, winter by freoview on July 8, 2015

There are a few winter problems at the Fremantle Winter Garden festival on the Esplanade with rain of the last days making the area into messy mud and some events tents flooding with water. The Health and Safety people were on site and the large slide was taken down out of safety concerns. The Future Common people, who will be relocating some of their tents, wondered why no one had been made aware that the Esplanade gets water logged because of drainage problems.

There was steady rain for two days but not exactly a natural disaster of outrageous proportions, so why were the out of town organisers not told by the City of Fremantle to expect flooding and a muddy mess so that they could have been pro-active and implement a rain drainage plan, instead of now letting visitors navigate through mud, put ugly fencing in to control where people walk, etc? Ten officers from COF were putting sand down and matting to make it all a bit better, but it looks shit really, and that is very disappointing for the general public and organisers.

Rain drainage problems at the Esplanade have been known for years, so why does COF allow a winter festival to set up in an area that gets water logged in the wet season, one has to ask. Where is the common sense in that when it affects the enjoyment of the visitors and the income of the organisors?

BIG FREMANTLE WINTER FESTIVAL STARTS WEDNESDAY!

Posted in festival, fremantle, winter by freoview on June 27, 2015

ice 1 ice 2

The ice on the huge 600 sqm-icerink of the Fremantle WINTER FESTIVAL on the Esplanade is slowly building up and large boxes with skates for hire are being unpacked. It will be a much bigger and more varied Winter Festival than we had three years ago with different kinds of entertainment each night, local food stall, a snow cannon and huge slide, and of course the bar will sell mulled wine and the kinds can build snowmen.

It will open on Wednesday July 1 and be on till the 26th so don’t miss out on the fun. It will be a great spectacle just to watch people trying to learn to skate. Bring a cushion to protect your bottom. ; > )

GETTING READY FOR FREO WINTER FESTIVAL

Posted in fremantle, winter festival by freoview on June 23, 2015

winter festival winter garden

Workers have started to set up the ice rink for the Fremantle Winter Festival that will open tomorrow week on July 1 at the Esplanade. There will be  a big slide and artificial snow as well as a Winter Garden with events every evening from story telling to a philosophy circle, foodie and dressing up nights, etc. all around nice cosy fires.

So it is time to sharpen and oil your skates, get the thermal underwear out and join the Freo community for yet another great event. I feel like mulled wine right now! Yum!!!

FREEBE WANTED FOR FREO WINTER FESTIVAL

Posted in city of fremantle, ice rink by freoview on February 24, 2015

The Fremantle community is often divided on events on the Esplanade when commercial organisers ask for hire fees of the reserve to be waived, so no doubt the application to hold the POPCORN X Winter Festival there from June 15 to July 24 could be controversial.

Hire fees for the 40 days would be $ 66,200 but the event organisers have asked for that to be waived as the event would not be financially viable according to them. The officer recommends Council approves this although he states that the claim that Popcorn X would not be viable when full fees are charged can’t be verified without the City having access to the financial data of the company.

The company expects some 100,000 visitors to the ice rink and will charge adults $ 25 and children $ 15, so if we average that they would turn over $ 2 million from ticket sales plus additional income from selling food and alcohol.

The officer assumes in his recommendation that the visitors will spend on average another $ 10 each on things like parking fees, drinks, etc and that would inject $ 1 million into the local economy.

Turf restoration fees of $ 15,000 would still be charged.

Popcorn X was here two years ago and only 10% of the reserve hire fees were waived and they presumably want to come back to Fremantle because it was financially lucrative for them then. They suddenly cancelled last year because they could not find a sponsor, and are still searching for one for this year. I assume a sponsorship deal would inject cash into the event and increase profits for the organisers. It is their intention to make the Winter Festival a regular event in Fremantle.

I loved the ice rink and went there several times to take photos, but it is not a winter festival. I believe it could and should grow with the City of Fremantle organising music and market events there during the period the ice rink is there.

The community is skeptical about the assumption that ticketed events inject millions of dollars into the Freo economy when the only tangible evidence are large profits for the organisers and the rest is really only guess work and hope. In this case the event organisers sell food, beverages and alcohol so there is little need for visitors to go elsewhere.

Fremantle Council will decide on Wednesday evening if the $ 66,200.00 hire fees for the Esplanade Reserve will be waived. I suggest half of that would be very generous.

ICE RINK SHOWS FREO COLD SHOULDER

Posted in city of fremantle by freoview on June 17, 2014

It is interesting to read that Perth will be having an icerink as part of their Winterland event at the Cultural Centre, and I wonder if it is the same company that was supposed to come to Fremantle, but suddenly canceled.

The icerink on the Freo Esplanade was very successful and attracted thousands of people, so for all of you ice skaters, Winterland is on from July 4-20, but you’ll have to go to the big smoke for it.

Talking about winter, there is a severe storm warning for the Perth region and the SouthWest, so stay safe and don’t drive like a dork!
