dsc_0010-1

It’s the long WA Labour Day weekend, so no reason not to be out and about in Fremantle on Sunday, as most of us won’t have to turn up for work on Monday or get the kids to school early.

Autumn has started and it was pleasantly cool this morning, so why not head out between 8am and noon to the fantastic Growers Green Farmers Market at Fremantle College on Lefroy Road in Beaconsfield.

It is the first Sunday of the month, so that means it is a big market with additional art&craft stalls, etc.

There is plenty of fresh produce, breads, pastries, eggs, organic and vegan food and of course yummy, coffee, breakfast and lunch on the menu.

Papaya Tree

From 2-4pm NSW youngsters Papaya Tree will be performing their mix of reggae, funk, rock and jazz in the Fremantle Arts Centre courtyard. It is a FREE concert!

The cafe, pizza bar and bar will be open and there are some great new exhibitions as well.

BRILLIANT FREO FATHERS DAY AHEAD

High Street sunrise

What a beautiful start to FATHERS DAY it was with a clear blue sky, a brilliant sunrise and a nice crisp morning, but it will warm up a bit later today.

I hope all you perfect dads out there will get spoiled rotten by the kids!

The early sun lit up the northern side of historic High Street beautifully, so I had to take a photo of my favourite street in Freo, so that I could share it with you all.

The Growers Green Farmers Markets are on at Fremantle College, so take advantage of the sunshine and have a wander around there.

FUN FILLED FREO SUNDAY

GG

It’s a perfect Fremantle Sunday to do lots of things and connect with our community.

Start the day with our own Growers Green Farmers Market at Fremantle College on Lefroy Road from 8am till midday.

From there up to Princess May Park where Clancy’s has put up Smoking in the Port with lots of BBQs, smokers, food tips and samples, chilli, etc. Starts at 11 am.

From 2-4 pm Bongziwe Mabandla will perform at the free Fremantle Arts Centre concert.

The South African has created a truly unmatched Afro-folk sound. Singing in both Xhosa and English, Mabandla fuses elements of hip-hop and dub with soul and traditional Xhosa music. With hypnotic vocals, heartfelt lyrics and beat-heavy grooves, he has the ability to move from melancholic melodies to crowd-surfing riot.

And from 5 to 9pm you can enjoy yourselves with the Harbour Sounds on the deck of the Maritime Museum on Victoria Quay. Free entry.

GROWERS GREEN MARKETS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

Posted in fremantle by freoview on August 20, 2013

We are constantly told to eat our greens, and that fruit and vegies are good for us, but it is getting even better, because eating the good stuff will now support a local student financially. The fantastic Fremantle GROWERS GREEN FARMERS MARKETS have  announced an exciting new initiative – the Growers Green Sustainability Scholarship. This scholarship will cover the school fees and associated costs up to $5,000 for a student attending South Fremantle Senior High School from years 8-10. It is entirely funded by profits from the Growers Green Farmers Market, and inspired by Market Manager and former City of Fremantle councillor Georgie Adeane.

As Georgie says, SFSHS has so much to offer students – beautiful grounds and gardens, award winning architecture, state of the art music facilities, Olympic size swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts and huge playing fields.

It is well known that SFSHS is a beacon for academic excellence, sustainability, music and the arts, marine studies, trades training, sport, inclusion and community.  Georgie Adeane encourages all students with a passion for the environment and a desire for a rewarding and positive education experience to apply for this scholarship.

Each Sunday morning, SFSHS hosts the amazingly successful Growers Green Farmers Market, providing an opportunity for the community to come together to shop for local produce and enjoy a friendly market atmosphere in the beautiful surrounds of the school. Managed by the P&C, the markets have provided a great funding stream for the school over the past three years, as well as the opportunity for many local businesses to flourish.

I love the Growers Green. It is a great was to connect with the Freo community on a Sunday morning. It is relaxing, the produce is great and the ambiance lovely, so it is heart warming to see the scholarship idea coming from it. Well done Georgie and Growers Green!
