GREG JAMES SCULPTURE STOLEN FROM BATHERS BEACH

There are some effing morons in this world! Last night the lovely Bella sculpture by J Shed artist Greg James was stolen from its bench at Bathers Beach.

The bronze sculpture is one of the most photographed artworks in Fremantle and is worth well over $ 100,000. It probably weights 150kilo, so it would have taken a few people to lift it up on the back of a van.

If you read this post, crooks, let me tell you that people like you disgust me! Greg James puts a huge effort into his artwork. It takes time and dedication and it belongs at Bathers Beach, not in some fool’s backyard. Return it!

Two arty photos I took this morning in Fremantle. The top one is new art by J Shed sculptor Greg James in front of the door to stone artist Jina Lee‘s studio there.

The bottom photo is of footprints in the Whalers Tunnel.

GREG JAMES’ EDMUND RICE BRONZE SCULPTURE

Edmund Rice

Fremantle J Shed artist Greg James is one of Western Australia’s truly outstanding bronze sculpture artists, as he proves again with the remarkable sculpture of Edmund Ignatius Rice, that will be installed at the Christian Brothers College in January.

Irish born Rice(1762-1844) was a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist who established the Christian Brothers, who still follow the traditions established by Rice.

If you happen to walk past J Shed at Bathers Beach ask Greg James if you can have a look at the bronze artwork.

Greg is already working on his next work that is very Fremantle. His great, great grandmother was a passenger on the Marquis D’Angelsea in 1829, that was shipwrecked at Bathers Bay. She lost all her belongings, including her piano, which will be the focus of James’ heritage art work, and something the City of Fremantle should definitely buy.

FREO’S J SHED ARTISTS MAKE THEIR MARK

Diego

Sometime local artists are undervalued because we take them a bit for granted, and that seems to be the case with the Fremantle J Shed artists at Bathers Beach.

Artist Greg James has just finished another bronze sculpture for Busselton. It will be his fourth artwork for the main street there and two more are commissioned, so that will make the main stretch of Busselton into the Greg James art boulevard.

Artist Lesley Barrett, who works out of J Shed has won the Pemberton art prize and artist Yuko Takahashi, who also creates at J Shed won the Claremont art prize.

And in the meantime J Shed artist Jina Lee has been creating stone sculptures in Italy for a few weeks.

Greg James’ Diego sculpture is about the Spanish settlers to Busselton who introduced olives and wine grapes in the region. It took over 12 months to create the work that weights 310 kilo.

Artist David Johansen, he on the right, was the model for the face of Diego.

Greg James’ next artwork is already on the go and will be a sculpture of Edmund Rice for the Christian Brothers School in Fremantle.

Janet Nixon receives the City of Rockingham Castaway award for her recycled sculpture from Mayor Barry Sammels

Fremantle J Shed artist Janet Nixon has won the Rockingham Castaway Sculpture Award with her beautiful dog artwork Checkers, made of recycled materials.

Janet really deserves this recognition as she has flown under the radar a bit in the shadow of her partner Greg James, so I am truly delighted for her as she is a wonderful person and her series of dog sculptures are amazing.

There are more doggies on display at the Bathers Beach studio in the big southern one with the large glass wall facing the beach, so go and check out all the great work that is going on at J Shed.

Congratulations Janet!!!

Fantastic to see Fremantle J Shed artists getting serious recognition in the West Australian today with an entire article by Annelies Gartner on the arts pages about their involvement with the CASTAWAY Sculpture Awards in Rockingham.

Greg James, Janet Nixon, Lesley Barrett and David Johansen all work out of Greg James’ J Shed studio at Bathers Beach and are all represented at the Rocky beach show that starts today, so go down south and have a look!

WALL ART AT FREMANTLE’S J SHED

I drove past J Shed at Fremantle’s Bathers Beach at 6.30 this morning, when I came back from the South Mole and discovered the creative artists there have beautified the old shed even more with large pencils and pot plants on the wall between the Greg James and Jennie Dawson studios.

Looks great guys. Well done!

FREMANTLE COAST GUARD WELCOMES VISITORS

coast guard

After so much rain we need some colour in our life, so here the bright and quirky Coast Guard sculpture by J Shed artist Greg James at the Fishing Boat Harbour.

I wished our Australian border control would be more humane like Greg’s artwork.

A BEAUTIFUL SUNNY FREMANTLE DAY

fun with the freo fishers

The sun is out so a nice start of the week. Enjoy it and appreciate how special it is to live in Fremantle.

I need a bit of sunshine after the dull and uninspiring leaders debate between Turnbull and Shorten. Decided to switch the TV off after 40 minutes of repetitiveness and realising none of them has a real vision for Australia.

These kids were enjoying the great Greg James sculptures in the Fishing Boat Harbour yesterday.
