BOWING TO FREMANTLE

A couple of photos I took this morning just east of Fremantle’s Cantonment Hill.

It was nice to have a tiny bit of sunshine and blue sky.

GRASS ART HAS A MESSY LOOK

Posted in art, city of fremantle by freoview on January 20, 2015

This is not a whinge or blaming anyone, but trying to help find a solution. A new artwork with three components was put up at Arthur Head near the Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre but the Parks&Gardens crew of the City of Fremantle is rightly reluctant to cut the grass too close to it in fear of damaging the public artwork. But now the grass is making it all look pretty messy so something needs to be done about it. Three small podiums of concrete elevating the artworks would allow for a whipper snipper to get to the edges and make it all look clean and tidy.

This consultancy was provided to the COF free of change. ; >)

BASKETBALL COURT FOR SOUTH BEACH OR ALFRESCO GYM?

Posted in community, fremantle by freoview on January 20, 2015

The City of Fremantle is considering putting a basketball court back at South Beach and is asking for public submission until February 9. The court that used to be there made way for more parking bays but at the moment Councillor Andrew Sullivan is looking at the possibility of putting the new court on the grass between the dunes and the toilets at the kiosk part. I am not sure if a (half)basketball court is still in the pipeline as well to be added to the Esplanade Youth Plaza(EYP).

Residents on Marine Parade complain about skateboard noise from the EYP, and the sound of bouncing balls can be very irritating, so any basketball court should have sound protection around it and maybe even a non-concrete, softer-less noisy-surface to pacify nearby residents and business owners.

Unlike East Fremantle, Fremantle has very little in regard to “alfresco gym” work-out equipment near beaches and the river, so COF should consider that as well for South Beach and instead add a half court to the EYP.

Sent your submissions to the Parks&Gardens Department at the City of Fremantle and have your say.

P.S. Nice to hear that one of my suggestions to make a percentage of public open space a requirement to receive discretionary additional height for buildings is now being proposed for the Matilda Bay Brewery site in North Fremantle. It is basic common sense to make sure there is sufficient public amenity and community space near high-density residential development.

PLANT A LEMON TREE TODAY!

Posted in fremantle by freoview on May 17, 2014

Today is the International PLANT A LEMON TREE DAY, so all you Fremantle people please do that and plant lemon trees on your verges and in your gardens, and let’s share the lemons around, to combat the ridiculous high prices we have to pay for lemons in the shops.

EAST WEST MOVE TO GIANT WAREHOUSE IN FREO SOUTH

Posted in fremantle by freoview on October 16, 2013

The East West Design home, garden, lifestyle, and many other things, traders have moved shop from Queen Victoria Street in the East of Fremantle to an absolutely massive warehouse in South Fremantle. It runs all the way from South to Marine Terrace. It is enormous! Check it out! Enter from 303 South Tce and 176 Marine Tce.

Outside work has started on a huge full building trompe l’oeil painting that will take months to complete and it very different from the graffiti wall murals we see popping up all over town.

FREMANTLE TOWN HALL GARDEN WALL

Posted in fremantle by freoview on September 24, 2012

The hanging wall garden at the Fremantle Town Hall is taking shape. I assume this is only the start of it and that it will expand up and out to make it more substantial and impressive, but it is a good start.

The idea came from a community placemaking workshop with David Engwicht, so it is nice to see one of the ideas come into fruition. I hope the Framing Fremantle project artworks by J Shed artist Greg James will also be installed at Kings Square soon, as they came from the same workshop. The City of Fremantle has had them now for five weeks, so the delay in installing them is disappointing.

WINTER MOOD

Posted in fremantle by freoview on August 3, 2011

Winter mood in the backyard of the cute old Pilot’s Cottage on Arthur Head, I am privileged to live in. The sound of the winds howling around the place, rain bucketing down on the roof, the “singing” of the trains when they pass through on their way to and from the port and of course the never ending sounds of our lively Fremantle port, all make it a very special place to live.
