The agenda of the Fremantle Ordinary Council meeting was 250 pages long, so there were many items on the agenda, too many to go into too much detail here on the blog, but there are two more articles below this one about it.

  • The Freo Street Doctor will receive $ 20,000 sponsorship.
  • Winterworld‘s funding application for $ 25,000 cash for the next three years, plus in-kind support of $ 45,000 for using the Italian Club carpark, has been reduced to $ 25,000 cash this year, down to $ 20,000 next year and down again the year after to $ 15,000. The in-kind support remains the same for the three years.
  • McCabe Street in North Fremantle will be getting traffic calming in the form of a speed-reducing plateau near Tasker Place, but Councillor Andrew Sullivan said more needed to be done about the public realm and the area needs more forward planning.
  • Improvements to the Hampton Road and Lloyd Street intersection in South Fremantle will be made.
  • Improvements to the Parry/Adelaide/Queen Victoria streets intersection also on the cards.
  • A container deposit scheme for plastic bottles will be investigated.
  • A City Centre Land-Use Mix policy to avoid too many of the same businesses, such as taverns in the CBD, is being considered.
  • The Fremantle Alternative planning policy is almost there. It just needs some tweaking required by the Minister for Planning.
  • Gas-filled balloons will no longer be permitted on City of Fremantle property.
  • Officers have been asked to write a Film Friendly Freo policy for Council to consider.

Black Swan Health has applied to the City of Fremantle for a $ 20,000 per annum sponsorship to be able to continue with the Fremantle Street Doctor services, which they have supplied for over 14 years.

The WA Health Department will stop funding the project at the end of this financial year on June 30, which in my books is an absolute disgrace!!!!

The Freo Street Doctor runs six mobile health clinics a week and is the only medical service for many people, so very essential for those who are doing it tough.

Black Swan Health Ltd. is seeking a $20,000 donation from the City to enable
continuation of the ‘Freo Street Doctor’ clinics. The donation request would support
indirect costs, including:
• Two “Freo Street Doctor’ vehicle running costs, licence, registration, insurance,
service, maintenance and repair, tyres and fuel.
• Outreach worker salary costs.
• Clinical consumable costs.
• Information Technology costs.
• Utilities

To put the money in perspective, the annual Winterworld Festival gets $ 25,000 cash from the city, plus the city loses out on parking fees at the Italian Club, and that comes combined to a total of $ 75,000 for just a few weeks of ice skating fun.

I know what I would prioritise.

Both items are on the agenda of Wednesday’s FPOL Committee, so come and speak out in support of the Freo Street Doctor!!!! 6pm at the North Fremantle Community Centre.

art auction

The annual Soroptimist International Fremantle HELP THE HOMELESS ART AUCTION is on again this Saturday June 6 at the Fremantle Town Hall. Register from 3 pm and auction starts at 5.30 pm.

There are too many artists who generously donated their works to mention them all, but check out the poster above. Names like Salvadore Dali, Robert Juniper and Elizabeth Durack should get the attention of serious art collectors, so don’t miss out to support the homeless and get yourself a great artwork or two.

Funds raised will be going to the Freo Street Doctor, St Pat’s My Sister’s Place and the Fremantle Multicultural Centre.

When a huge group of doctors and nurses hit town last evening people were wondering if they were mature age Prosh students or people participating in the Pride Parade, but it was just the fun mob of the Fremantle HASH HOUSE HARRIERS doing a fundraiser for the FREO STREET DOCTOR, one of the really great local causes to support.

They stopped cars, went into pubs and cafes, and their gorgeous looks helped pull dollars out of the pockets of even the biggest scrooges.
