FREO’S FUTURE CELEBRATES ESPLANADE YOUTH PLAZA

The Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza skate and parcour park celebrated its fifth birthday today.

Great to see so many very young people attending and loving the exciting sport.

I was asked by a City of Fremantle officer why I had mentioned in a blog post early this week that the majority of new Fremantle Youth Network members are female. For two reasons. It is a fact, and I like it that in a time when political partied quarrel about female quotas Freo has a Youth Network with a lot of young women in it-and five young blokes as well.

Let’s not forget also that the 13-member Fremantle Council only has four female Councillors, so I am all for more women power!

FREMANTLE YOUTH PLAZA FIVE YEARS YOUNG

EYP

The Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza is five years young this weekend and that will be celebrated with a skating festival on Sunday the 14th of April from 12-5pm. This is part of WA Youth Week which runs from the 13th to the 20th of April.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said Youth Week had always been a popular event with young people, and this Sunday was shaping up to be a fantastic festival with a range of engaging and fun activities planned.

The family-friendly event will include a skateboarding competition in association with Skateboarding WA, slacklining and parkour workshops, fascinating virtual reality stations, live interactive street art, Hip Hop classes, market stalls, amusements, etc.

The new Fremantle Youth Network members will be at the EYP surveying the community, so come along and have your say.

The City’s Esplanade Youth Plaza provides many free skateboarding and parkour workshops throughout the year, and is known as one of the best youth facilities across the country.

For more information about EYP Festival 5.0, visit the What’s On page on the City of Fremantle’s website.

BUSY FREO WEEKEND GOOD FOR TRADERS

Posted in city of fremantle, food, retail, tourism by freoview on September 17, 2017

I am always happy for our traders when I see a lot of visitors in Fremantle on weekends, because most week days are not very good for retailers and the food businesses in Freo.

Great to see the Fishing Boat Harbour Piazza and the Char Char Bull restaurant renovations now completed and open to the public.

Down the road at Little Creatures there is a Sunday art market, and at the Fremantle Markets there was the delightful buzz of every weekend.

CONNECT WITH OUR YOUTH AT FREO SKATE PARK

Posted in community, family, fremantle, youth by freoview on April 9, 2017

SPOTLIGHT ON SUICIDE AT FREMANTLE YOUTH PLAZA

Posted in aboriginal, city of fremantle, esplanade youth plaza, mental health, suicide, youth by freoview on October 9, 2016

The Changing Your Tune event at the Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza skatepark was a lot of fun but also a stark reminder that so many people in Australia suffer from mental health issues and commit suicide.

There was live music, burlesque and skating coaching clinics, but also hundreds of shoes on display to remind us that suicide is the leading cause of death in Australia for 15-44 year olds.

In 2016 3,027 people took their own life, with the Aboriginal rate of suicide twice as high as that of non Aboriginal people.

Western Australia has the highest rate of Aboriginal suicide in Australia, and a very disturbing trend of very young people seeing no other way out of their despair than killing themselves.

NEW BURGER RESTAURANT FOR FREMANTLE ESPLANADE

Posted in city of fremantle, esplanade reserve, food, hospitality, local government by freoview on October 7, 2016

The City of Fremantle will be spending an estimated $ 700,000 on building a new hospitality venue for the new Esplanade Hub near the railway line and ferris wheel, while telling the owners of the long-established Carriage Cafe to close business by the end of April 2019 and demolish or dismantle the building and pack it up.

The FPOL Committee of Council will on Wednesday debate to lease the new building to  Park Burger, the preferred tenderer out of three, for between $ 150-250 per square metre per annum. The new burger restaurant “Will be set in an architecturally significant building” according to CoF documents, and will be 250-350 square metres large.

The building will run on “green power” and the operators might grow organic products on and around the building. They will also seek to acquire a liquor license.

It will be managed and operated by a team of professionals with extensive hospitality experience in WA and Fremantle, but the documents do not disclose who these people are. My  guess is that they will include Fishing Boat Harbour operators getting a bit more of the hospitality share in Freo.

The entertainment section for the hub was also tendered for and the preferred tenderer is the Tourist Wheel that is already there, so nothing new in that regard.

FREMANTLE FAMILY FUN AT ESPLANADE

Fantastic to see so many families at the Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza skate park and the Winter Festival ice rink this morning, and the food stalls were also doing a roaring trade.

It also makes for happy trading in the Fishing Boat Harbour, so that is all good for the traders down that way and hopefully also for other cbd businesses.

The weather will be good for another few days so take advantage of it and head out to the Esplanade before the rain returns.

IT’S FREO FUN DAY EVERY SUNDAY

I hope the rain will disappear soon as there are so many outdoor activities in Fremantle today.

The Esplanade Youth Plaza Festival is on from 10-4. It’s a free event so take the kids there, sit on the grass and watch the amazingly skilled young ones.

First things first, of course, so I will traditionally start my Sunday with a stroll at the Growers Green Farmers Market and buy some yummy Dutch bitterballen at Treacle Treat. Linda also sells those delicious fluffy little Dutch pancakes! Hey kids time to take your parents there!

After that I am off to have a look at SAGRA at Kings Square. It’s a traditional Italian cultural community event of food, wine, music and dancing, and of course I’ll be enjoying the traffic free Cappuccino Strip and the alfresco and entertainment there.

And when I have done all that I will go home and  put my feet up and watch the Dockers game. Hopefully that will not spoil the fun day.

FREMANTLE TOO HOT TO SKATE

Posted in fremantle, youth by freoview on February 8, 2016

EYP

I have never seen the Esplanade Youth Plaza skate park totally empty. Even when it rains some of the braver or more desperate skaters turn up, but today was clearly too hot even for the most addicted to the sport.

I took this photo at around 11.30 am when it was just 38 degrees, so probably a lot hotter with the heat reflecting back from the concrete.

If the hot weather continues it could affect visitors’ numbers to the St Jerome Laneway Festival which is on this Sunday, so let’s hope it will cool down a bit especially for those who will set up the stages, etc.
