…BETWEEN YOU AND I by RIC SPENCER opens tonight at 6.30pm at PS Art Space in Pakenham Street

Fremantle Arts Centre curator Ric Spencer’s exhibition is a painting and drawing based installation instigated by recent surges in demonstration, protest and the democratic use of public space.

Generated by Ric’s walks around Fremantle the show is a tactile response to the politics of public through-ways and our fluid material use of them.

Exhibition runs until 30 April 2016 (Tue-Fri, 10am-4pm, Sat 10am-2pm)

A BLING OF A SHOW AT FREO ARTS CENTRE

Posted in art, fremantle, fremantle arts centre by freoview on February 7, 2016

If you like bling the new Fremantle Arts Centre and PIAF show Weaving a Black Sun by Dani Marti is one for you. Spanish born Marti who now lives in Sydney and Glasgow has shown internationally and his work is in major art collections.

FAC curator Ric Spencer gushes about Marti’s seductive and confronting portrays and uses words like sexuality, intimacy, luscious, visceral and tactile. He knows a whole lot more about art than I do, because I only saw tactile art made of beads, necklaces, etc and some videos that did not grab my attention, but that is just my lack of creative imagination and visual literacy. I somehow actually liked the large works that invited to be touched, although I don’t like bling.

Please do go and see it for yourself though and never let my comments discourage you from visiting art exhibitions, because we are, thanks to our parents, culture and upbringing, all different.

PHOTO SHOWS AT FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE

Posted in art, fremantle, photography by freoview on June 2, 2015

fac 1 fac 2

Two very different photography shows open Friday June 5 at the Fremantle Arts Centre, so all you photography and art fans out there make sure to view them.

Curated by Susan Hill, the works in QUIET MOMENTS feature strange scenes, peculiar figures and random objects from everyday life combined in unexpected ways. Rich in colour, hidden meaning and metaphor, viewers are invited to contemplate the images and project their own day dreams into the scenes.

Quiet Moments features some of the UK, Europe and Australia’s premier photo artists: David Bate (UK), Jane Burton (VIC), Christophe Canato (WA), Kate Hamilton (UK), Estelle Hanania (FRA), Susan Hill (WA), Sascha Weidner (GER) and Christopher Young (WA)

The second show is by John Gollings who is Australia’s most celebrated architectural photographer, documenting every iconic new building in Australia over the last forty years. Although best-known for his images of the built environment, he has also undertaken a number of landscape projects throughout his career, photographing lost cities and areas of destruction.

AFTERMATH features stunning aerial landscapes taken after the Black Saturday bushfires tore through Victoria in 2009. Gollings’ haunting images demonstrate the effects on the land itself, we see it stark, stripped and vivid.

This is a touring exhibition from McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery (VIC).

LOOPY ARTSPEAK LEXICON

Posted in fremantle by freoview on December 13, 2010

It’s the silly season, so since I am living in Fremantle, the city of artists, I decided last night that I would regurgitate my ARTSPEAK  lexicon, which I wrote a few years ago, out of frustration with the pretentiousness of language used by some art curators and writers.
