summer

I like it hot, so can’t wait for summer, and the season of markets, festivals and events to start in Fremantle.

Took this photo on my way to the Council meeting late yesterday afternoon at the Cappuccino Strip near the very cosy Benny’s bar and cafe.

What a stunningly beautiful Sunday in Fremantle today!

No need to take my word for it though, but the thousands of people came to Freo for a stroll, meal or coffee, show that I am right.

It is such a delight to see more people in town, and to know that this is going to assist our traders.

It is good to know that in the near future all the development that is happening in the inner city will see more people living and working in the CBD. A couple of hotels are also in the pipeline, so the hundreds of thousands of visitors will be able to stay in our port city overnight.

It’s all good and I am very optimistic about Freo’s future!

NEW STAIRS TO KULCHA BUILDING

Posted in city of fremantle, heritage, hospitality, Uncategorized by freoview on July 28, 2017

The new public access stairs to the former Kulcha venue above the Dome cafe on the Fremantle Cappuccino Strip are rather massive, but I understand it will include a lift for disabled access as well and that is a good thing.

The venue will become a restaurant and music venue again, so that might still happen this year.

NEW FREMANTLE BAR HAS BALLS

Posted in bar, food, fremantle, hospitality by freoview on March 8, 2017

A new bar is opening on the Fremantle Cappuccino Strip next to the Dome Cafe.

It’s a cocktail bar that has got balls, if the name is an indication.

Welcome to The Meatball and Cocktail Bar!

FREMANTLE LONGS SHOTS

I went for a walk around Fremantle this afternoon only armed with a 300mm lens, just to keep my eye in. One can often become a bit lazy with all those zoom lenses around, so to force oneself to have a good look just with the one focal length lens is a good idea.

Here some of the photos I took. Click on the photos to enlarge them.

FREO’S LAZY PARKERS

parking

We humans are a funny lot and I had to laugh out loud when I noticed all these cars parked along the Cappuccino Strip on Christmas Day.

It was not as if there was a shortage of parking bays in Fremantle as there was hardly anyone in town, but it must have been on the bucket list of some of those who went to Sandrino and Pizza Bella Roma for lunch to finally park on the strip.

piazza-1

Work on the Little Market Street Piazza behind the Dome and Gino’s will start soon in Fremantle and through traffic from Collie and Nairn streets to the Cappuccino Strip is now no longer an option.

New seats and trees will be installed in the next weeks, weather permitting, so enjoy Freo’s tiny new square.

PERFECT FREMANTLE HERITAGE SHOWCASE

Freo 1960

I talked with quite a few people yesterday, including some officers and Councillors of the City of Fremantle about how good the FREO 1960 classic car event in the West End was. It did everything good placemaking should be all about. It attracted many visitors, who supported local traders. Cafes did a roaring business and Bodkins Bootery had one of its best days of the year.

For me it was all about minimalism and not trying to do too much. There were no market stalls or anything that did distract from the main event, and from the retailers in the area, and that was a very good thing.

Contrary to yesterday the trial closure of the Cappuccino Strip did not work for me because it was over organised. The trials did not give people the chance to just enjoy the strip, instead most of the space was taken up by bars extending out further into the street and it made it look cramped and not a place to relax unless one wanted to drink booze. It did not create the family ambience it could have done and it needs a rethink, because it mainly supports a few traders to the disadvantage of others.

Create public seating, instead of private alcohol related ones and make it a space to enjoy where kids can draw on the street, etc.

What FREO 1960 did yesterday was showcase Fremantle’s heritage, and very many people walked up to have a look at the Roundhouse as well. I don’t believe the jewel in the crown of Fremantle is in the limelight enough and High Street is the perfect location for events like this that support our retailers.

THE BACK OF FREO FACADES

Posted in fremantle, hospitality, western australia by freoview on May 4, 2016

The world is full of facades that don’t always tell the whole story of politicians, ourselves, buildings and streetscapes, so here a different view of the Fremantle Cappuccino Strip. The back of it.

The delightful toilet mural by Lady Bananas at Grill’d Burgers, next to the colourful bin section of the Mexican Kitchen and the tired looking Capri backyard.
