Fremantle’s America’s Cup legend John Longley launched the SUN, SKIN, HEALTH book by Terry Slevin, Director of Education and Research at Cancer Council W.A. on board the sailing training ship  STS Leeuwin in Fremantle port today.

Slevin said that “This book is about understanding how to get the very best out of our sunny climate, while minimising the risk that is inherent in it.”

Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world with 2,000 people dying from skin cancer in Australia each year, so slip, slap, slop continues to be the message.

Leeuwin crew member Ashleigh Tapper climbed up the 33-metre high mast to show that if 2,000 books were stacked up to represent those who die each year from skin cancer, it would go all the way up to the top of the mast.

Posted in fremantle by freoview on September 21, 2014

The Cancer Council 24 hour Relay for Life event was held this weekend at the Dick Lawrence oval in Fremantle. The fun event attracted many participants who braved the heat on Saturday and the rain on Sunday while walking, jogging or running around the oval.

Well done all!!

JOIN THE RELAY FOR LIFE CANCER FIGHT

Posted in fremantle by freoview on March 12, 2014

The Fremantle RELAY FOR LIFE cancer fighters are holding an information session this Monday on the inaugural Fremantle event on September 20-21.

The information session is at 7pm on March 17 at the clubrooms of the Dick Lawrence Oval, corner Lefroy Road and Shepherd Street, Beaconsfield.

On September 20-21, Fremantle’s Relay For Life will see teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns in keeping their team’s baton moving around Dick Lawrence Oval in a relay style walk run for 24 hours.

During the Relay For Life weekend, the oval will be transformed into a small city as the teams pitch their tents and knuckle down for some serious fun.

Many teams adopt a theme for their campsite and get into the spirit of the event with fancy dress, while singers, bands and other entertainers keep the participants motivated throughout the weekend.

A novel idea to raise funds for the Cancer Council comes from ART ON THE MENU, and exhibition where each work represents food, cafe or restaurant. The auction will be held at the Corner Room, 221 South Terrace, South Fremantle on Monday September 2 at 6pm, and the exhibition will be up all of September, so have a meal or coffee, check out the art, and support the Cancer Counil.
