HAZE SUNSET AT FREMANTLE

Posted in city of fremantle, sunset by freoview on October 5, 2017

There was a bushfire south of Fremantle, I hope controlled burning, and that often makes for good sunsets, so I went out again after a very busy day to take these photos.

My apologies to FICRA convenor Mary-Rose Baker that I dared to tread the boards of the West End again.

BUSH FIRE VOLUNTEERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Posted in fire, fremantle, Uncategorized by freoview on April 15, 2017

The 114th WA Volunteer Fire Rescue Services Easter Championships are being held this weekend at the Gilbert Fraser reserve in North Fremantle. Go and have a look at it from 9am this easter Sunday morning. It’s fun to watch!

Bush firies from as far away as Port Hedland, Esperance and even Victoria are taking part and they deserve recognition and support for their tireless work to protect their communities.

The event has been held at the North Freo oval for over 40 years but I was not aware of it until I read a tiny one line somewhere on Thursday.

It needs to get a lot better promotion so that the local community comes out in droves to watch it. It’s rather pathetic that just under 100 spectators attend the events and they were family and a few supporters.

SMOKE HAZE BLANKETS FREMANTLE

port-haze

The smoke haze over Fremantle was not a very pretty sight at all until the Fremantle Doctor blew it away after midday. It was quite smelly and unpleasant as well, so no wonder I’ve got a headache.

BIBRA LAKE FIRE THREAT TO LIVES AND HOMES

Posted in bushfire, emergency, fremantle by freoview on February 16, 2016

A fire that has been burning near Bibra Lake in the suburb of Coolbellup in Cockburn has been upgraded again at midday as lives and homes are at risk according to FESA.

The fire started at 6 am at Pioneer Park near Progress Drive and is believed to have been deliberately lit.

The students of the nearby Waldorf School had to seek shelter inside the school when the fire broke containment lines mid morning.

I just came back from there and there are a lot of very worried people in the area watching the helicopters and fixed-wing planes dumping water on the fires not far from there homes. There was a strong breeze and that is not helpful.

ROE 8 ON FIRE. BUSHFIRE WATCH!!!

Posted in bushfire, cockburn, fremantle, perth freight link by freoview on February 16, 2016

A bushfire WATCH AND ACT has been issued for people in an area bounded by North Lake Road, Forrest Road, Coolbellup Avenue and Cordelia Avenue in the southern part of Coolbellup in the City of Cockburn.

It appears there is a pattern here as locals say there are now regular fires in the area that appear to be deliberately lit, so is someone making a stupid political statement or are these just morons who like to see beautiful nature go up in smoke while threatening the homes of people?

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FREMANTLE GREEN PLAN

Posted in city of fremantle, green plan, local government, nature by freoview on November 4, 2015
Smoke haze at the Swan River.

Smoke haze at the Swan River.

The City of Fremantle’s draft GREEN PLAN is out for community input so make sure to download it from the COF website and put submissions in to make it a really good plan to protect and enhance our public green spaces, increase our city’s essential tree canopy, create more small green lingering nodes all over Fremantle, protect established mature trees from demolition through new development, etc.

Here is some of what the Green Plan says:

The 2020 Green Plan provides the background, rationale and framework to deliver projects and programs over the next five years. Key initiatives and targets include:

 Every resident and worker to be within walkable distance to public open space.  Progressively increase tree canopy across the city to achieve up to 20% by 2020.  Design adaptable open space that allows for future flexibility as the community and open space function and needs change over time.  Planning for future water security to identify opportunities for best available water sources for existing and new open space.  Develop links that increase the amount of flora/vegetation and increase habitats for native fauna and encourage their movement between green spaces and to increase and improve biodiversity areas.

Key projects over the next five years include:  Investigation and identification for accessing public open space in the priority areas of Hilton, O’Connor, White Gum Valley and Beaconsfield.  Investigation and identify options to improve and/or expand public open space is proximity to future high density areas.  Undertaking an Urban Forest Strategy to manage and guide tree and vegetation population across the public and private realm, to increase canopy and biodiversity and to mitigate the Urban Heat Island Effect.  Undertaking water demand modelling to inform future fit for purpose water supply options.  Prepare landscape concept plans for green links and develop a biodiversity plan.

Public submissions closing date is November 11, so participate and be part of the solutions!

PHOTO SHOWS AT FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE

Posted in art, fremantle, photography by freoview on June 2, 2015

fac 1 fac 2

Two very different photography shows open Friday June 5 at the Fremantle Arts Centre, so all you photography and art fans out there make sure to view them.

Curated by Susan Hill, the works in QUIET MOMENTS feature strange scenes, peculiar figures and random objects from everyday life combined in unexpected ways. Rich in colour, hidden meaning and metaphor, viewers are invited to contemplate the images and project their own day dreams into the scenes.

Quiet Moments features some of the UK, Europe and Australia’s premier photo artists: David Bate (UK), Jane Burton (VIC), Christophe Canato (WA), Kate Hamilton (UK), Estelle Hanania (FRA), Susan Hill (WA), Sascha Weidner (GER) and Christopher Young (WA)

The second show is by John Gollings who is Australia’s most celebrated architectural photographer, documenting every iconic new building in Australia over the last forty years. Although best-known for his images of the built environment, he has also undertaken a number of landscape projects throughout his career, photographing lost cities and areas of destruction.

AFTERMATH features stunning aerial landscapes taken after the Black Saturday bushfires tore through Victoria in 2009. Gollings’ haunting images demonstrate the effects on the land itself, we see it stark, stripped and vivid.

This is a touring exhibition from McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery (VIC).

AMAZING SMOG SUN OVER FREMANTLE

Posted in fremantle, sun by freoview on May 11, 2015

ss 1 ss 2

Air pollution often creates stunning visual scenery and today was one of those days in Fremantle. Controlled bush burning caused smog all over Perth and created this stunning red sun just before sunset.

I would like to dedicate these photos to Wendy who stood next to me at the gun deck of the Round House with her two little dogs and told me she and her husband very much like reading my blog.
