It is nice to see that Fremantle locals John Butler Trio are the top billing of BLUES&ROOTS 2015 on March 29.

Here are some of the other acts:

Paolo Nutini, David Gray, Jurassic 5, Paul Kelly, George Clinton, Jimmy Ckiff, Mavis Staples, etc.

The Blues&Roots have become a great yearly tradition in Fremantle Park, so something to look forward to already. Tickets for it are good Christmas gifts and can be ordered on line. Check out the Facebook page or Google.

ODE TO FREMANTLE

I have been in one of those reflective moods for some days now, so I thought to write and ode to Fremantle. We often forget how special life is and how privileged we are to live in a country like Australia, in a city like Fremantle.

I have been living in Freo now since 1992 and I have never had a greater sense of belonging than here in our cute little port city. We often hear that Fremantle is unique and from my personal experience I believe it is. Of course there is a lot of room for improvement, but I have never lived in a community that is so engaged, diverse and tolerant.

Whenever I hear visitors to Freo raving about the beauty of our heritage buildings, the friendly people and the great weather, I feel proud that I too am one of those who makes this place the special experience it is for tourists and for those who live here. It is our dedication and willingness to participate in community debate and local politics, our acceptance of change and our respect for the past that drives this city. Fremantle is all about creative minds and warm hearts, people who care and who are willing to share.

We are often too close to see the beauty we live in and we have a good old whinge about just about everything. I too am guilty of that. One does not even need to travel though, but only watch TV or read a newspaper, to so see how lucky we are to live in a country of peace and tolerance, a country with good schools and a good health system, and with low unemployment rates. Of course we should still do better to look after those who need our support; the disabled, the homeless, the Aboriginese, etc.

Whenever I wake up in a bad mood, or am worried about my future, I feel happy that at least I wake up in Fremantle, because I am truly in love with this unique city, that will grow and progress into an even better place.

Let us never forget that it is people who make places and who give a city a sense of belonging, and that it is all of us who create this special community. Thank you for sharing Freo with me!

SUNSET EVENTS FOR J SHED

Posted in fremantle by freoview on June 10, 2013

Fremantle based Sunset Events will be operating a cafe/bar from the most southern J Shed gallery at Bathers Beach as part of the Arthur Head Art Hub development, according to the City of Fremantle. Sunset Events is well-known for its organisation of the Blues&Roots, Southbound, Northwest, St Jerome’s Laneway and other music festivals, but as far as I know they have not been involved in the hospitality industry.

The Sunset Events website states they operate out of a little shed in Fremantle, so now they are adding a big shed to it. The company was conceived in 1997 “out of an obsession with music, art and the environment.”

I don’t know how many other directors the company has, as it does not mention any on their website, but contacted director David Chitty to find out their plans for the J Shed venture. He replied it was too early to comment on it. I wish them good luck with developing a great concept as it could revitalise the West End drastically. Keep me in the loop please David!
