Freo's View

A White Gum Valley resident made me aware of a fake Fremantle City Council Facebook page that is a hard-try at satire, but is more an immature taking the p… site. The problem is that there are actually people who believe the page is managed by Fremantle Council, with reader Peter Dean being outraged about a photo of a bombed out city, questioning how this council can make a joke about what is going on in the Middle East and calling it a disgrace. They wouldn’t and they didn’t!

There is a post about Freo Council going to start a congestion charge on drivers and doubling street charges to make the CBD more pedestrian friendly, and that by 2022 there will be a complete car ban in the inner city.

The page is basically full with not very clever April Fool’s jokes, such as the one that the Fremantle Golf Course will be closed and could be used for white water sport, a gun range, or a cat sanctuary.

The question is if there should be a disclaimer somewhere to make readers aware that this is not an official site of the City of Fremantle, because there will always be people who are stupid enough to believe so.

It is taking forever for the SKS Group to build the Fremantle Hilton Doubletree hotel on the former Point Street car park site and they are a bit slow reading Freo’s View blog posts as well it appears.

I received an email this morning threatening me with legal action if I do not remove my blog post that Twiggy Forrest had bought the site.

The blog post was one of four April Fools blogs I published on April 1 this year and I made it clear in a later post that the posts were only April Fools.

I have suggested to the SKS Group to walk down to the chemist and get an injection of humour.  ;>)

I have also asked them to please start with the construction of the hotel asap as the Fremantle community has been waiting for it to happen far too long.

I missed the Blessing of the Fools today to celebrate April Fools Day, so I publish a golden oldie I took a few years ago at Fremantle’s St John’s church.

I  also have to make a confession that my blog posts about the sale of the Hilton hotel site to Twiggy Forrest, the secret merger talks between Freo and East Freo councils, and the departure from Fremantle of Fremantle Society president John Dowson were all made up stories to celebrate the first day of April.

And I added the City of Fremantle’s funny April Fools about Freo Time and daylight saving.

It was all done in good fun, so I hope I fooled a few of you and that it gave you something to smile about!

I published two Roel’s APRIL FOOLS today, but one went unnoticed.

The Quokka story was clearly a hoax but so was the solar panels on Fremantle roads article.

It’s always a challenge to try to fool my unbelievably clever, wise, and sceptical readers, and I did not ask for assistance from the Australian cricket team.

I hope you are all having a great Easter weekend!

mining the port

What a shame April 1 is still four months away, otherwise I could have made up a nice April Fools with this photo.

The State Government desperate to get rid of our state’s enormous debt is going to allow mining in Fremantle Port?

Nah, it’s the Joides Resolution research vessel in port, just behind the railway station.

No panic Freo, the Kings Square blog this morning was an April Fools, but rewarding to receive a slightly worried SMS from Sirona Capital managing director Matthew McNeilly asking if it was an April Fools.

Also fake news was the didgeridoo story and unfortunately the one about J Shed as well.

Great April Fools also from Freo Sea Rescue who claimed the traffic bridge would become a toll bridge for boats passing underneath it, to pay for repairs.

So welcome to April, one of my favourite months because it has the Fremantle International Street Arts Festival and ANZAC Day.

Okay you delightfully gullible (April) fools, April Fools is over and I got quite a few of you.

Most of you did not believe that our Mayor Brad Pettitt would be the Liberal party candidate at the Federal election, but many more of you believe that the City is seriously considering making High Street west a pedestrian mall, and I am surprised there was so little protest.

Most of you did not pick up that the BIKEMATE was also an April Fools. I thought if I post three white lies I’ll confuse you, and it worked. One needs a slightly mad and creative brain to come up with this stuff, but hey, I am known for being Loopy. ; >)

I had fun and I hope you had as well.

Here some photos of the Blessing of the Fools at St John’s Church at Kings Square. They told me they also had a Catholic blessing at the Notre Dame University chapel.

Don’t let anyone think the City of Fremantle staff does not have a sense of humour. This great April Fools was posted on the COF website. Well done. I love it!!

The City of Fremantle is shocked and outraged by today’s state government announcement that it has secretly passed legislation that will see many metropolitan councils, including Fremantle, merge into larger super councils.

The plans will see Fremantle merge with Cockburn, East Fremantle, Kwinana, Rockingham and Melville to become the City of South Swan. Councils have been given until the end of the year to finalise the arrangements, with the changeover happening on 1 January 2016.

The decision was announced at a press conference in Perth today by Premier Colin Barnett with only a few hours’ notice to councils with the Premier stating that the new boundaries aligned with WALGA’s zone boundaries and those of the South-West Group of councils.

Former Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri was announced as interim commissioner on the new merged local government.

Fremantle Mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt, said the decision had come as a shock and that the City of Fremantle would be fighting to oppose the shock merger plans.

“It’s come right out of left field and quite frankly, we’re outraged that this has happened with absolutely no notice to us. We will be fighting this decision and I call upon all other councils to do the same,” Dr Pettitt said.

“This is a backflip with a triple-pike by the state government. After it rescinded its previous amalgamation plans just a couple of months ago it has now gone for super-sized local governments”

“It’s completely unrealistic for the state government to expect local councils already battered by the previous reform process to now plan for even greater upheaval,” said City of Fremantle CEO Graeme Mackenzie.

The City is now in discussion with its lawyers to decide the best course of action moving forward.

Yep, some of you got fooled by my April Fools about the City of Fremantle engaging Relationships Australia to help to better communicate with the community, but the unfortunate reality will remain that not much will change and the concerns of the vocal majority will largely be ignored by Freo Council.

It is certainly proof that his blog is read widely when so many people contacted Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt and me about his alleged resignation. Brad tells me even the Minister and his own mother contacted him and were concerned about him quitting the job. So to make it clear to all; “FREMANTLE MAYOR QUITS” IS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE I created and has no substance of reality at all. Brad is very happy to continue as Freo’s number one bloke.

Sorry Brad. I thought it was pretty obvious, but clearly others got sucked in. That’s a pretty good April fools then. ; >)
