I rarely go to Perth because the big city just does not interest me, but today I thought I needed to broaden my horizon a bit and jumped on the train to the big smoke.

It did not look anywhere near as bad and vacant as the media has been screaming about and during my two hours walking around I only noticed four beggars, so that ain’t too bad.

I thought to share these photos with my Freo readers. The top photo are shadows at the ferry terminal at Elizabeth Quay, the second one is more shadows at the traffic lights in Wellington Street, the third one is of arty seating at Rain Square, and the last one is a reflection at the escalators at Forest Place.

After having to endure standing next to Mathias Cormann at a pedestrian light for three minutes I was happy to return to good old Freo and am more convinced than ever that the best thing about Perth is Fremantle. 😍

You’re right Roel, technically Fremantle is within what demographers call the Perth metro area.

It’s interesting that according to the Aust. Bureau of Statistics the Perth Metro Area even includes Mandurah. One day it might include Bunbury.

Just imagine, one day the newsreader can talk about the southern Perth suburb of Bunbury. To me that’s absurd.

I much like the way the US describe their metro areas, for example it is the San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley metro area. The Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington metro area and so forth.

Considering the role Fremantle played alongside Perth in the creation of the metro area, it’s strongly deserved to be called the Perth Fremantle metro area.

But that’s enough of that, and in the scheme of what really is important in life, arguing a case for what a metro area should be called is a very minor issue indeed.

Well done on your blog Roel, always good to see what’s happening around Fremantle.

Technically Fremantle is part of metropolitan Perth John, but I do agree with you that I always dislike it when the media says something is happening in Perth when it is actually happening in Fremantle. Remembers ome years ago the Perth world sailing championships. They were off the coast of Freo.

    Cool pics Roel!
Bit harsh on Mathias Cormann. He was the most intelligent and insightful boss of HBF in 30 years.

Hey Roel, isn’t the line “the best thing about Perth is Fremantle” an oxymoron.

I mean, it really says that Fremantle is Perth.

That type of statement reminds me how some bureaucratic organisation on heritage a few years ago talked about Perth maritime buildings… that is, the maritime buildings of FREMANTLE being called PERTH’s maritime buildings.

As a Fremantle born and bred bloke, which forever will call Fremantle my only home town, I have to admit I like to use to phrase, ‘the best thing about Perth is going back to Fremantle’

Anyway, good on you Roel for your love of Fremantle, many of us feel the same.
