Retail vacancies

I pinched this graph from Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt’s blog who responded to some of the negativity on social media on his blog. Read his blog post here:

This one is about comparing the retail vacancies in the major shopping streets in the Perth metro area. It is always good to have the facts at hand and it shows that there are a lot of empty shops in a lot of streets.

One of Western Australia’s best restaurants, Friends on the edge of the Perth CBD is closing after 20 years not because of poor patronage or anything else but that their lease has come to an end and their landlord wants to significantly increase their rent to the point where the business isn’t viable.

Commercial property owners right across the country, not just in Fremantle, have to get serious about their valuations and returns. Government policy has to change to disincentivise having long term vacant property.
