Pettitt talk

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt is the next speaker at the monthly Fremantle Network event next Tuesday June 19 at the National Hotel at 6pm. He will share his impressions of Singapore with us and what Fremantle can learn from this modern city.

The Freo Mayor went on a study tour to Singapore with representatives from the South West Group, that comprises of six local councils.

On one level Singapore and Fremantle seem very far apart. A high density metropolis of over 5 million that’s at the crossroads of global trade, in contrast with our relatively small and isolated port city.

But there are some important lessons, both good and bad, that Freo can learn from Singapore, be that city greening, density, heritage, affordable housing, tourism, and multi-modal transit investment.

“Luggerite” is wrong. No natural forest removed. In fact Singapore needs the natural forest for water catchment. “Lionel” is correct. Sky Garden, Marina Bay Area is from reclaimed land. Cemeteries have been removed, yes, for low cost public housing.

maybe the Friends of Boo Park should start a campaign to get CoF to develop the unused northern end of Boo Park into a Botanical Garden before the golfing mob take it over

That is built on reclaimed land – it used to be water, not forest.

I’d love a real Botanical Gardens, like the one in Sydney.

It always amazed me that in lush tropical Singapore, they replaced natural forest with artificial constructed, engineered and manicured “super trees” as you pictured. Very Singapore, very un-Freo. I just hope that that our Kings Square Moreton Bay Figs were not what Brad was thinking about in Singapore…
