It is nice to be a tourist in your own town sometimes, so when I wandered past Fremantle’s Little Creatures on Saturday morning I decided to take some photos of the very popular brewery restaurant .

My favourite part of Creatures is the Next Door bar on the first floor that overlooks the Fishing Boat Harbour, but it wasn’t open yet when I took these shots.

You are so right, Carl, and I recommend everybody to walk around Freo with a positive mindset and see how privileged we are to live here. Is it perfect? No, but neither am I, nor anyone else I know.

Roel, last Monday – that is the 6th June – the bride and I decided to be tourists in our home town. We moved here in 1976; and I guess we sometimes take it all for granted after 40 years. So we walked down Arundel Street to Marine Tce; then to the skateboard park. We watched some great moves by the kids who all seem to show great respect to all. There’s a nice village-care happening. Then we wandered across the tracks past Creatures to the renovated boardwalk; checked out the nearly-complete new piazza – nice space, and then sat awhile on the beach-chairs at Bathers Beach. Just beautiful. We then checked out Kidogo. In the small side gallery, Rod Collard was showing some of his work, and also working on a new painting. We had a brief yarn, apologised for interrupting – he was a generous host; and then we walked towards the Roundhouse tunnel past those beautifully scented coastal bushes that just take you right out of the city; there’s a reminder of bits of Rottnest about them. The smell; the deep shadows in the foliage; the rustle of the leaves. It was sorta hypnotic in a way. Then we walked through the tunnel and Kapow!! We were back in the city – cars, bicycles, people, noise. It was a great transformation; a theatrical delivery. We walked along High Street and stopped at Cafe 55 for lunch. Then we checked out the newly restored Town Hall up close. Excellent job; careful and true. There was more, but you get the picture. So yes Roel, being a tourist in your home city has great rewards.
