The City of Fremantle has adopted a Marriage Equality Proclamation to support same gender marriage, which no doubt will delight the gay and lesbian community in Freo.

The proclamation supports mariage equality irrespective of sex, sexuality or gender identity.

Councillor Doug Thompson said that as someone raised as a Catholic he had not put much thought about it and had questioned if local government should get involved in it, but he now believed it was essential that the support started at local community level.

Other Councillors expressed they believe that same sex marriage in Australia is inevitable as it will snowball from local level.

Just because other councils are also engaged in this sort of useless feel-goodery doesn’t make it better. This is the problem with local governement – it has forgotten its place. Make sure our rates provide a good local service, keep your nose out of political stuff.

We all know that people power often works, Lionel and Fremantle Council is not alone in this as several Councils in Australia have already made the marriage equality declaration.

I fully support marriage equality but once again the council are farting around with stuff that they have no control over and no business commenting on. Get back to running the town properly you fools.
