Freo's View

Hey City of Fremantle, do us all a favour and drop the bullshit to retain some integrity! I noticed you are now calling the Kings Square Project the Cultural Precinct. That is ridiculous spin!

A library and a few cinemas do not make a Cultural Precinct. In Perth the Cultural Centre has the WA Museum, WA Art Gallery, the Library and PICA and is a true centre for culture, but the Kings Square project will predominantly be a commercial and retail precinct with some bars and cafes, so not anywhere near being a cultural precinct.

I am in favour of the Kings Square development but cut the crap please!

Steve, agreed. I can’t imagine defending it from demolition in 50 years time. It’s bland and safe commercial mediocrity. Formulaic; unremarkable; disappointing. We need better, but we have no peer-review process in place. And no discernible or appropriate skillsets on Council that I can see.

As discussed before by others on this blog, lack of design controls allows both the mediocre and the poor to flourish – but it also allows great gems to pop up from time to time. It’s a pity they are outnumbered, but that’s the history of all aesthetic journeys.

The pursuit of beauty is a great race, but history teaches us that the very best in all things – music, sculpture, fine arts, architecture, cooking, whatever……………… in the minority. The main issue with architecture of course, is that it’s compulsory viewing. We can easily escape someone’s crappy painting; disappointing song or symphony; questionable sculpture; or inedible meal – just don’t go back.

But we are totally surrounded by other people’s buildings. They are inescapable. This proposed new one for Freo is one that most will perhaps not strongly want to escape from – we hope. But it doesn’t create any joy; it doesn’t ask any questions; it doesn’t aspire……………….it just is.

I just wish the building design wasn’t so average. Does anyone actually like that building? It’s been 3+ years of sitting on the drawing board / cutting block and I haven’t heard one person say how much they’re looking forward to the project or how much they like the building. It’s mediocre and the size feels totally wrong for the space.

I think Civic Precinct is probably a better description. I think were staff were trying to get a description of it as Freo’s heart.

Ah Roel, next you’ll be telling us that the Fremantle Director of Strategic Planning and Projects should just be called the City Planner; and that the Director of Infrastructure and Project Delivery should just be called then City Engineer. How demeaning for these fine officers who have worked their way up to the top of the pile of mediocracy.
