The Fremantle grapevine is abuzz with the rumour that the Fishing Boat Harbour traders want a shark net installed at Bathers Beach.

I have never heard of a shark being spotted at Bathers Bay and the community protest against the plans for a shark net at Cottesloe were huge, so no doubt many in Fremantle will strongly oppose a shark net at the inner city beach, as I do as well. I have little doubt Fremantle Council would not be in favour of it either.

Bathers Beach is hardly a well-visited beach, unlike Leighton, Port, Cottesloe, Swanbourne, etc. beaches further north, and that is not because of fear of sharks but because of lack of facilities and lack of proper promotion of the CBD beach. A shark net would be a waste of money.

As far as I can understand the situation with shark nets… would not last at bathers beach, too much swell in a storm and the big thing, too much weed which would build up in the net and damage it in the swell. Totally different installation than it is at say the eco shark net at Coogee near the Omeo wreck.

Beaches don’t need promotion and facilities aren’t a big factor beyond access and parking.

Bathers Beach simply has a reputation for stingers.
