I noticed this smelly old sneakers installation ‘artwork’ near the Fremantle Paddy Troy Lane this morning.

That was my original point. Your photo of it may be art, but the subject is most certainly not.

I don’t think it is intended as art, Lionel, just bored kids throwing their sneakers over the wire.

Thanks Roel but I don’t need an art history lesson.

Who is the artist? What are they trying to say here? Or is it just some hipsters who think mimicking Compton street corners makes them edgy?

I think you would be surprised what is considered art around the world if you reseaeched it, Lionel. I remember a bucket and a broom in a gallery corner, a turd, etc, being considered art by some of the more outrageous artists and galleries. Check out Josef Beuys, who was very famous in the 70s.
Nowadays a lot of art is labeled conceptual but often that means it is basically bad art hyped up by artspeak in artist’s statement. Art is everywhere. I see it every day in reflections in buildings, water, windows, cars.

Only in Freo is this considered art.
