Freo's View

Hey all you Freo bike and sport lovers, come and watch the Subaru National Road Series, the Tour de Perth  bike race along Fremantle Marine Parade this evening from 5 pm. It should be a very good spectacle that runs from Cliff Street to Norfolk Street and back along Marine Parade, so an alfresco seat at the Esplanade Hotel bar and cafe might just be the right spot for some early evening entertainment.

It is the first event in this year’s series that will be a 45km race for world class national and international riders.

At least it’s consistent, consistently a shambles, u think the city would have someone who oversaw these operations to ensure consultants, contractors are properly briefed and min standards are met.
So sounds like another group of people who will have a negative view of bikes(due to mentioned issues) just because of simple management issues.
One step forward 2 steps back.
I was thinking Roel its amazing that with drive the council has towards bikes and there use but the number of bike shops that have left freo over the years is surprising, you would think that the bike business would be booming in freo, no?

The event itself was fantastic, but like others I couldn’t figure out the logic in the Traffic Mgt!

The event has returned to the route on the Esplanade, adjacent to the hotel, which was the route used in the past and it really was a spectacle. The long straights with a tight turn at the south and a short section through part of Notre dame and around the roundabout made for a really challenging race. The start was blistering. I was stood at the corner of Mouat St and the speed on the first lap was scary, spectators were jumping back from the rail as the pack filled the full road width, you could smell burning rubber on every corner, and the acceleration out of the roundabout from Cliff St was frighteningly fast. These young guys were flying. Unfortunately there was a crash on the last lap, just 50m from the finish between the two leading sprinters, 40 other riders right on their tail at 60kph!

The SBS commentators and TV crews were there so the event should be on the Weekend SBS Cycle show, and that has to be good for Freo.

Considering the very poor media coverage the event received, the crowd was excellent. Freo really needs to get behind such events. We talk about revitalising the City, and this was an example of just that, but where were the locals, where was the weekend crowd? This wasn’t an event just for the lycra clad crowd, this was a truly exciting sporting event that would have enthralled many. Great vantage fro the Esplanade Hotel.

It was a shambles indeed Michael with the wrong roads closed that made traffic jams worse. Probably out of town traffic management not knowing how the west of town connects. Not good!

Well, not much chance of that when my normal 6 min trip home took 46 mins tonight because of the road closures and lack of resulting traffic management. I have to ask whether the actual return to Fremantle rate-payers is worth the cost in inconvenience and petrol… This month has been a horror with event road closures in Freo.

free light and bells for all participants this eve, Mark. ; >)
It’s a closed circuit so they don’t have to obey road rules.
