I do not understand the policy at the Fremantle Library where users of laptops are welcome to use the exterior power points at Kings Square but inside the library we are not allowed to use power points. That makes very little sense to me.

Yesterday we started the first introduction session to FREOPEDIA to show people how to upload historic information on WIKIPEDIA, the project where we are QR coding all significant buildings and sites of the city, but there was no power available to them and they were told to go outside if they needed electricity. That is not workable when one searches for info in the history library that one wants to upload.

Although the City’s Manager Economic Development and Marketing Andrew Eastick has promised to address this problem for the FREOPEDIA project, it is something that needs to be looked at in general. Why can we only access power outside the library and not inside? It can’t be a cost issue.

I have been told it is a health and safety issue with in the past multiple laptops being connected to single power outlets and that can be dangerous. I understand the Library has got a liability responsibility, so they are looking at upgrading the power points but that might take some time as it has not been budgeted for.

It does seem a very immature position to adopt.

In my limited experience of the City of Fremantleadministration it seems to be very bureaucratic with some administration staff engaged in their own petty little empire building which creates a negative perspective of all admin staff. There are some areas which in my view need to rediscover the concept of “customer service” and to be reminded who they are employed to work for without a doubt; the library it seems is one such area.

On the subject of the library, I have only visited it once and didn’t find it inviting and haven’t bothered to go back. When I was a resident of the City of Stirling I was a regular visitor at my local library which was actually in the Town of Cambridge. Despite not being a resident of the Town of Cambridge I was welcomed and treated well as a member of the library. It seems that the City of Fremantle library staff could learn a lot from the Town of Cambridge.

Back to the power usage issue, this is 2012 after all. The use of portable technology is the norm. The City of Fremantle administration has to get out of the dark ages and wake up to this and and remember it is here to serve the public of Fremantle not the other way round.

This silly ban on the use of power points must go now.
