PETTY FREMANTLE PORTRAIT PRIZE
It was my intention today to tell you who the winner of the inaugural Fremantle Portrait Prize is but I was declined entry to the announcement event at the Moores Building last evening although I was one of the participants and have promoted the fundraiser many times on this blog, Facebook and Twitter.
If the organisors were worried too many people would cost too much money for drinks, they should have charged for drinks as an additional fundraiser. To not allow participants, who paid $ 30.00 per photo to enter the award, to be part of the the winner announcement is pretty bad and mean form. I won’t be promoting and supporting next year’s portrait prize or participate in it.

Correct Roel wasn’t invited, but do we need to have these personal attacks on someone whi in my opinion offers a pretty fair view of Fremantle as it is happening.
I do not know Roel apart from this blog, but I appreciate what he is writing for the place that i live in and am part of. Do I agree or disagree with everything Roel is saying? – No, but I do appreciate what he is doing for Fremantle.

You should do your homework before attacking me Peter. I am constantly positively involved with anything that happens in Fremantle and spend a huge amount of hours each week on community work. I did not whinge about live sheep trade, I reported on it as I do on as many events as I can. That is what this blog does, so scroll down and look at all the gorgeous photos I have taken to promote the city, the events and businesses I promote, etc.
I also promoted the Fremantle Portrait Prize extensively on this blog, Facebook and Twitter end because of that it would have been right to report on the winners and the organisors should have invited me.
As for the seven people who read my blog. The blog will be 3 years old on the 17th this months and I have built it up so around 5000 people a week read it. No mean feat for a blog that is primarily only about the small city of Fremantle. I am pretty proud of that and hope you’ll continue to read it as well.

Get a life Roel. No point in wasting your whole life complaining about everything in the world. Live sheep trade, your unfortunate experience of not being allowed into an invitation only event you weren’t invited to etc etc. What a whinger. Is there anything at all you’ve got a positive word to say about? I’m sure all seven people who read your blog will think twice about visiting again if this is the best you can do. Mr Garwood and Mr Quinter above have neatly and correctly outlined the situation. It’s actually quite sad that you have nothing better to do than take a little personal disappointment and try to turn it into vitriol like this. How small-minded, what about the 696 entries they received? What about the fact the committee is completely voluntary and unpaid and put in thousands of hours’ work organizing this event. No, of course, I forgot… compared to you being a bit miffed, all of that means nothing. Yes, I get it.

Excellent to see some good commentary toward the end of these comments. Disspaointing Neil that you had to say what you said. For the record i don’t know Roel personally, but a little respect would would be valued.

It was an invitation only event and clearly designated as such on our website! We did not mean to exclude anyone who had supported us. Many people donated their time and effort to make this competition a successful one, not the least being members of the organizing committee, who freely gave of their time and effort over more than 2 years to bring it to fruition. All proceeds have been directed to Arthritis and Osteoporosis WA. I am sure we will do better next year and still welcome your support. Kind regards, John (member of the organizing committee)

They might not miss me Roger, but they will miss me promoting the event through this blog, Facebook and Twitter. While even the City of Fremantle sees Freo’s View as a media outlet and includes me in their media releases, the 5000 people a week who read this blog will have to find out elsewhere who won the prize last night.

Roel. Finalists were invited as well as orgaisers. It was an extremely succesful event which didn’t cost a single cent of taxpayers money but was able to donate several thousands of dollars to the arthritis foundation. There were several overseas and interstate winners too which bodes well for the event in future years. Entrants only had to pay $15 per print and there were close to 700 entries in total. It would not have been possible to invite all entrants to attend but the 60 finalists were and their prints are on display in the Moores Building.. When it is considered that FotoFreo only managed to get about sixty entries into their competition, and FF is funded to the tune of several hundreds of thousands of dollar by both the public of WA and sponsors the inaugural Fremantle Portrait Prize represents a huge success.
I think it’s a little churlish to say you won’t support the next one but judging by it’s success they’re unlikely to miss you.
