INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE NEEDED FOR W.A.
Two things I picked up in the media this morning:
David Karotkin, president of the W.A. chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, makes some interesting points on development and architecture in today’s West Australian, all of which apply to Fremantle and development plans for the inner city.
Karotkin says we need to “find ways to raise community awareness of design quality” and that it is not essential to agree on how to achieve good design, but speaking about it is. He believes that corporate and government clients are fearing criticism and hence not strive for new standards and cutting-edge design. Karotin writes we need more than financial and functional fulfilment and should encourage experimentation and innovation in architecture.
In the Fremantle Gazette, Mayor Brad Pettitt talks about upgrades for the Cappuccino Strip. Yes please!! Work starting on Cantonment Hill, and community driven activation of Kings Square and a design plan for the city square. Brad also says planning for a light rail route will continue.
We are in a very interesting phase for Fremantle and one where the whole community will need to be involved and listened to. We have great opportunities and need to get it right. Ego driven blinkered stubbornness is not wanted, but open-mindedness and respectful dialogue is required.

Perhaps we need to start a real ‘community conversation’ on design and architecture for Fremantle. Need to involve, Brad, the planners, architects. ‘the people’, and so on. I’d be happy to work with you and Brad to facilitate such a thing (or series of ”things’…) … mark r
